You can use non-Bose EQ (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for overall a detailed guide. Over the past ten years, about 4 pairs of series I or II have passed through my hands, as well as 3 pair of IV, V. In my opinon, and of others, the series I and II were the "best." Due to the acoustic suspension, the bass goes lower, and I have not heard of (pardon the pun) of any issues of driver foam rot on the original drivers. In contrast, ALL pairs of IV, V that I've owned needed the edge repair kits. I say skip the problem child, and get an "original" 901 (I or II), a powerful amp (cheap nowadays) and be happy. About EQ: I get good results with just a graphic EQ or better, auto EQ such as the Behringer DEQ2496. This is for the technically inclined, who doesn't mind some tweaking and extra cost; even better if you have test equipment. If you don't want the hassle buy a Bose series EQ appropriate for your speakers.

Golden Memories (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for that historical wrap-up; it brought back fond memories. Amar Bose taught me network theory (electronic circuit design)... good class, and his lectures never put you to sleep. The 901 was a true sound breakthrough. Meanwhile some students were ripping off his design and making their own sets of duplicate speakers in the MIT hobby shop. A pair built up from piece parts, all available commercially, cost just over $100. A new set of 901s in 1968 cost $476... quite a bit of dough at that time, when you could fill up a grocery basket for $25.

Good article, with one small problem. (Reply to this comment)

This is a great article overall, but I'd like to point out something about your recommendations on the foam/cloth re-edge kits.
I buy a lot of Bose 901s from garage sales, eBay etc, and have re-edged tons of them. I usually use the cloth/lifetime kit on them and have experienced NO difference at all in sound (the excursion is the same). BUT, I must tell you that the only one I've found to be identical performance is from Orange County Speaker (www.speakerrepair.com). I've used others and they are very stiff, but the OCS cloth kit is soft and sounds just like the foam when installed.
So my recommendation is, if you want the cloth kit, go with the OCS one and you won't be disappointed. They also sell the foam kit too.

Wow, (Reply to this comment)

lot's of good information here. Many things I didn't know, including this:
"Therefore...Series I & II {1968 to 1976} are compatible when it comes to mix and matching speakers and E.Q.'s.
Series III & IV {1976 to 1983} are compatible.
Series V & VI {1983 to Present Day} are compatible."
This should become a reference for potential Bose 901 buyers.
