Top 10 Horror Movie "Final Girls"Mar 28 '06 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line A review on the 10 best "Final Girls" in the horror movie genre. After watching so many horror movies in my lifetime, I have found the formula of it to be so entertaining. The most important aspect of a horror movie though is the "Final Girl". She is the one who no matter what, survives until the final fight scene. Normally a very good "Final Girl" will go through an emotional transformation of sorts, growing in spite of the circumstances they are surrounded with. A very bad one will mostly scream and cry for the whole runtime, those are not included on this list. So I devised the TOP 10 HORROR MOVIE FINAL GIRLS, some of my choices you may not agree with but I was honestly sucked into the movies because of their roles. 10. WHAT LIES BENEATH- Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer) Upon seeing the trailer for this movie, I just figured it was going to be a boring thriller that would be extremely predictable. So I managed to avoid this one like the plague until it got released on DVD. Thankfully it is better than the preview suggests and a great deal of that is owed to Michelle Pfeiffer whose character is dealing with being home alone and allows her curiousity get the better of her. She also manages to grow from being a meek housewife into a smart cunning heroine which is exactly what gets her into the list. MEMORABLE SCENE: When she hits the redial button on the phone, unmasking her husbands true motivation. 9. THE OTHERS- Grace (Nicole Kidman) Not every final girl has to become a Ripley clone where she becomes tough and fights back. Instead we get given here an amazing performance by Nicole Kidman as she tries to keep her family together even though her life is falling apart around her. Add to that the burgeoning ghost story and you have a character who is both powerless and strong willed at the same time. MEMORABLE SCENE: When she discovers the photos of the servants. 8. THE RING- Rachel (Naomi Watts) Another mother character but this time she uses her reporting skills and her urge to protect her son to save them all from dying after 7 days. As the clocks ticks away, we see an increasingly resourceful character who refuses to give up even when time has run out. By the end of the movie you really root for her to stay alive because she has endured so much. MEMORABLE SCENE: Rachel breaking down after realising she hasn't stopped the curse from getting to her son. 7. NEW NIGHTMARE- Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) People could argue that she deserves to be on this list for the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie but I disagree. I did love her character in the original, but her amateur acting tended to bog it down from time to time. However by the time this movie came around, she had grown into quite an engaging actress. Her character has to question her own sanity and fight against those who doubt her that Freddy is in the real world. But most of all, she manages to be a strong opponent to Freddy Krueger unlike she had been in the previous movies. MEMORABLE SCENE: When she gives in and decides to play Nancy one more time. 6. JEEPERS CREEPERS- Trish (Gina Phillips) The most important part of this movie is the relationship between brother and sister Darry and Trish, it also happens to be the strongest. As Darry gets more and more worried about what is happening, Trish manages to be his anchor who continually fights to keep them both alive. It's very disappointing that they chose to ignore her character for the sequel and instead focus on a bunch of mindless teens stuck in a bus. MEMORABLE SCENE: Trish chasing after Darry when he is kidnapped. 5. SCREAM 3- Sidney (Neve Campbell) How can you not include her in the list? Also it was a tough choice deciding which movie she shined the most in but it had to be hands down Scream 3. In this movie she has shut herself off from the world in fear of what could happen to her or the ones she loves. Over the course of the movie she bravely overcomes this to unmask the one who is ultimately responsible for the whole mess her life has become. MEMORABLE SCENE: When she cuts off the usual killer's rant to explain that she has heard it all before. 4. SAW 2- Amanda (Shawnee Smith) This is a controversial choice I know, because at the end of the movie we realise that she was a completely different person than we thought. But I felt she had to be included because of her backstory and her level head that made her more useful and likeable than anyone else trapped in the house. As everyone else is screaming and fighting with each other, she constantly tries to remind them of what they need to be doing to stay alive. I also loved how the suicide angle brought her back into the game when she thought she had gotten out. MEMORABLE SCENE: When Amanda gets thrown into the needle pit. 3. ALIENS- Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) I don't even really need to explain this one, her character managed to inspire all the heroines that you see in movies today. She was the original tough chick who refused to be the victim and created a very memorable character in the process. MEMORABLE SCENE: "Get away from her, you b****!" 2. HALLOWEEN H2O- Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) This was the movie that should have ended it all but I am afraid that money talked a lot more to the studios than the angry fans. Laurie came full circle in this movie as she starts as a secretive alcoholic who had gone through witness protection to get away from Michael. But inevitably she has to face her demons and protect her son in the process. Jamie Lee Curtis shines like never before in this and manages to outdo any previous slasher efforts she has ever done in her career. It was a shame she got killed so quickly at the beginning of the next movie because it really undermined what she had achieved with this one. MEMORABLE SCENE: This is a tie between when she jams the gate and turns around to go face Michael rather than running away like she had always done or chopping off Michaels head. 1. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4- Alice (Lisa Wilcox) Most may not agree with my choice but I think it is the right one. The movie her character was in, was honestly all over the place and didn't live up to the original at all. But the saving grace of this movie is the character of Alice. She is a very shy introverted person who likes to daydream because she doesn't like the life she lives in. Her mother died when they were young and her father had become an alcoholic workaholic as a result leaving her to be the domestic one who cooks and cleans. She basically clings to her brother and his girlfriend because she doesn't really have social skills. That all changes when she gets drawn into the world of Freddy Krueger and sees the people around her getting killed. She begins to inherits character traits from every one of them and chooses to no longer be meek and quiet but instead fights back. The transformation of Alice is one of the most entertaining turns I have seen in a horror movie which is surprising considering the movie. But it is made even better thanks to Lisa Wilcox's performance, I even believe she outdid any Final Girl in the whole entire franchise. She continued into the next one and managed to be the best thing about that too. MEMORABLE SCENE: When Alice is getting ready for her fight with Freddy. This scene shows how much she had grown by the end. |
