Information??? Hi sweet Christine! I can't believe that I am just getting to this one. More important than this very informative review.....how are you? And how is your mom? Life has not been ideal with me this year, and I have missed you. I am just now trying to find an Epinions life again.

I'd be happy if I could just train my CHi to be consistentlty housebroken.

I saw an amazing "heeler" the trainer would tell him "back 3 steps" and a million other VERY specific commands, smartest dog I ever saw!!!

Don't know about sheep dogs but... (Reply to this comment)

My wife finds many of these commands useful for me. Just kidding. I've watched some shows with dogs working the sheep and it's a joy to behold.

... and there I was thinking all that barking was just pent up excitement about the days work ahead.

We don't get the Dog Whisperer Show here but I will keep a look out for it, maybe it will turn up on Animal Planet one day.

Your story made me laugh. How cute!

I was watching the Dog Whisperer and learned something about sheep herding dogs that answered a lot of questions for me. My Spike used to bark incessantly in the car, even though he seemed to like going for rides. I never could get him to stop. Cesar (the dog whisperer) said that sheep herding breeds see everything outside of the car going by them and want to herd it all, so oftentimes they bark a lot in the car.

(And if you don't watch that show, you might like it....)

I thought that was interesting,

I am not surprised, they really are a smart breed. One of our dogs loved working so much that when we mowed the lawn, he tried to herd the lawn mower. Damn thing never did what he wanted it to do though!

Take care,

But your review reminded me of my beloved Spike. He, too, was a stray border collie (at least we thought so). Once my ex took him to a sheep ranch to see if the herding behaviors we'd seen at home carried over (like the way he'd always carry the bottom of my bathrobe when I walked up the stairs). Anyway, the story goes that Spike immediately (apparently instinctively) began herding the sheep without instruction. Unfortunately, I never saw it for myself and we never pursued it, but I guess he was a natural. Maybe he's herding all of those sheep in lambie heaven.

Great info! Thanks,
Leslie

LOL, what a delightful story!
Border Collies are a British breed and I think they are the core breed to the NZ heading dog. They really are born to it aren't they.

Take care

This is probably too much info for some people so bypass this if you think it might be. . . I have a part border collie mix from the pound, and apparently her instincts tell her to herd. I was surprised to find this out after I adopted her and bravely walked around the house without clothes on. I rarely do this anymore. She bites me on the bite to "herd" me.

I need to wear a sign that says, "I am not a ****
sheep!
