Carbohydrate, Fat And Sugar Free: Coca-Cola Enters The Energy Drink Market With Vault Zero

The Bottom Line If energy is what you seek, this no carbohydrate "sugar free hybrid energy beverage" is worth checking out.

I am a die hard Diet Dr. Pepper fan. If a restaurant doesn’t have it or the store is out of it, I am not a happy camper. In the past I’ve tried out a lot of so-called energy drinks like SoBe Adrenaline Rush, RockStar [and Diet RockStar], Piranha, Red Bull, Full Throttle and Gookinaid. The trouble with most of these is that they are designed for people who are actively into sports, body building or hit the gym and want something to give them some extra energy. Sure Red Bull is something that is available in almost every 7-11, Wa-Wa and Circle K but try to quench your thirst with one of them.

So what makes this different from other energy drinks? First off it has a great taste - when you see ‘citrus’ on the can you might immediately think that it’s some lemon lime combination or something like Mountain Dew. It’s not bitter, it’s not overly sweet and it definitely quenches your thirst while giving you a nice little kick from the caffeine that’s added to it. If you read over the ingredients you’ll see that it contains concentrated orange juice, natural and artificial flavors, that doesn’t really give you a good indication of what this stuff is going to taste like. I went into buying and drinking this blindly. My local grocery store had the six packs on sale for $1.25 so I decided to give it a try and was immediately hooked on it. When I went back to get more I saw that there were stickers on the six packs, coupons allowing me to save $1.10 on two six packs so I started loading up the cart with Vault Zero. I did accidentally grab a regular six pack of Vault and gave one can a try but it gave me some nasty heartburn from the sugar in it so I turfed the other five cans off on to one of my neighbors.

So what exactly does Vault Zero taste like? There is a slight hint of orange juice but chances are if you didn’t know that it contained it, you wouldn’t really lean towards saying that it was an ingredient. It’s citrus - sort of like a watered down lemonade that is slightly carbonated but doesn’t have a tart taste to it. It tastes great when you stick it in the freezer for about five minutes but you can also serve it over ice without it losing any of it’s flavor or zip. It doesn’t foam over like regular sodas so when you pour it you don’t have to stand there and wait for the foam to dissipate. Since this contains caffeine it’s not something that you will want to serve to kids or people who are sensitive to caffeine containing products. You aren’t going to get the jitters or shakes from this like you might from something that contains ephedrine like Stacker 2 but if you drink two cans you are going to feel pretty freakin’ good. Coca-Cola doesn’t list the amount of caffeine that they put in a serving [one can] so you really don’t know how much you are consuming.

So far I have only see the Vault and Vault Zero in the twelve ounce cans and plastic bottles - I’m not sure if these are 16 or 20 ounce bottles because I never bothered to look at them in the cooler display. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether Coca-Cola will put this out in the two liter bottles, since it is marketed as an energy drink I am sort of thinking that they will stick to the smaller serving sizes. This does quench your thirst without loading you up with a lot of sugar. That’s why I can’t understand why people would want to drink the regular version of Vault. Eventually you are going to crash from the sugar in it so why consume empty calories or tons of sugar when the Vault Zero will do the same things for you without the side effects.

Coca-Cola really pushes that this is low in sodium and goes so far as to say that it has 35 mg or less of sodium per 240 ml [that’s eight ounces, less than one serving]. Some might say that this is tricky to phrase things in this manner but no matter how you slice it, this drink does have less sodium than my usual Diet Dr. Pepper [that contains 55 mg per serving / 12 ounce can]

The Bottom Line

I have no doubt that I will be consuming a lot of Vault Zero. The taste is light and doesn’t leave you with any type of nasty after taste to contend with. This is a nice break from my usual drinks like Diet Dr. Pepper and Arizona Diet Green Tea but I can’t say that everyone will like the taste of it. The nuclear green color of it makes it look a lot like Mountain Dew but it tastes nothing like it. I’ve been pushing this on everyone that’s come by the house to visit and most of them were really shocked by the taste of it. They expected it to have a heavy lemon lime taste to it or have so much carbonation in it that you are burping for ten minutes. Yeah, you will burp from this but not as much as you do with regular or diet soda. If you are looking for something new to try or just want an energy type drink when you need a pick-me-up, give Vault or Vault Zero a try. As always, thanks for the read!
