To pluck the best pearls from the sea is indeed a Herculean task but when done, its worth every bit the effort.

Yes, I think so too. But then Ben-Hur was supposed to be THE movie of the 1950s-60s. Among the entire list, Ben-Hur is undoubtedly my least favourite.

If compiling my personal list, it would be nowhere within my favourite 500 films. One of my friends remarks that Charlton Heston was "downright constipating in the lead role" (a direct quote). And he actually ended up winning the Oscar?!

Nevertheless I had to include the movie on this list despite having very little love for it.

I am planning to compile a list of the ten best performances in English movies.

I solved the problem by posting both lists... but IMO Elizabeth , Howards End, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Constant Gardener (and indeed hundreds of others, including the 1925 silent version) are superior to the very long and very unbelievable 1959 Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston gritting his teeth for what seems like at least 46 hours.
