The Bottom Line Be careful purchasing backorder or import titles. Packaging for shipping needs to improve.

This past September, I made my first purchase from CD Universe. I had heard good things about them and thought I would give them a try. I purchased a brand new import CD from them. At the time of my purchase, the title was listed as "in stock" usually shipping within 3-5 days. The title was kept at this status for about six days until it was changed to "backorder". Backorder status meant the product was not in stock, but would try to get the item within 45 days; otherwise the order would be canceled. I kept checking back every couple days. At times the title would be in stock, and then the abruptly change to backorder status. This was a little aggravating as I had planned on giving this as birthday present, and had no idea when the CD would be in stock.
Since this was a hard to find import CD I thought I would see if they would get it in stock before the 45 days. About 25 days later they did get it in stock and my status changed to processing then finally to shipped. After several days after the shipping date, I received my item.
I was so happy to finally have the manila envelope in my hands. Upon opening it, I found an unwrapped CD which was cracked. I had intended to give this brand new CD as a gift, but from the looks of it, I thought I had spent full price on a used CD. Printed on my invoice read that import titles often do not come shrink wrapped, but are brand new. Funny, I never saw this comment on their webpage.
I e-mailed customer service telling them I was not expecting the item to come as it had, and to have the case cracked as they only used a bubble wrapped manila envelope as padding. I did receive a response the next day telling me I could return the product. However, I already paid $2.99 shipping and handling. The website specifically states that for returns, shipping is not refunded. I was not eager to get a refund when I was going to be out shipping costs twice. Finally after about four e-mails I was told that shipping both ways will be refunded along with the cost of the CD.
I returned the CD and have been credited the money, but it was a lot of work to go through. They were nice enough to make an adjustment and refund everything and that does count for something, but still I am not apt to be a return customer.
