Dbbum's Full Review: Master Of The Flying Guillotine [PA] * by Jumpstea...
Master of the Flying Guillotine was released in 2005 by Jumpsteady on Psychopathic Records. This marks the second album from the Bruce brother of Insane Clown Posse's Violent J. His first attempt, Chaos Theory, didn't fare so well and unfortunately neither did this.
Master of the Flying Guillotine features 18 tracks of music made for the juggalos. However, unlike Violent J who falls into the dark horrorcore genre, Jumpsteady is more of an uplifting nerd. Despite some of the familiar dark beats provided by Fritz The Cat, nearly every song is geared towards those geeks and nerds that grew up on fantasy games like dungeons and dragons. There's also two songs dedicated to Jumpsteady's family, even his wife and daughter get in on the act. And like most Psychopathic albums, the juggalo family pitches in too. Mike P, Esham, Lavel, Violent J, and even Myzery all make appearances. Ultimately though, all these specialties don't make up for a nerdy azz album based on a 1975 Hong Kong material arts film.
The main issue I have with this album and Jumpsteady in general, the guy can't sing. Violent J sounds horrible and Jumpsteady isn't much better, you can obviously tell they're brothers. Also add the fact that Jumpsteady uses odd words throughout the album to describe things. It's sounds like he opened a thesaurus and replaced every common word with something completely random in an effort to sound smart.
Some of the highlights are Master of The Flying Guillotine, the headliner track of the album, in which Jumpsteady describes the guillotine. This all goes back to the 1975 film where a ringed guillotine envelops a persons head and is activated by pulling a chain. The chinese themed sound effects also provide homage to the hong kong film. Lyrics: "Master of the flying guillotine making them scream. When my tiger palm shreds their bodies to smithereens. Pop goes the weasel when the weasel goes pop. Then from up top ya see your headless body flip flop".
A rather cute song is Battlefield sung by Jumpsteady's daughter to the tune of 1980s Love Is A Battlefield by Pat Benatar. The lyrics are similar but far less powerful. The music is also completely different, slowed way down, and the 80s bubblegum effects were taken out. Samantha made an appearance on Chaos Theory but sounds so much better on here.
There are a few filler tracks Intro, Crom Skit and Sonar Skit that aren't worth mentioning although the sonar skit does lead into one of the funniest songs on the album Dungeon Master. In this song Jumpsteady basically talks about every nerds dream; dungeons and dragons, pizza parties with soda instead of beer, collecting action figure toys, and comic books to the hobby store like crack you're hooked. Lyrics: "All through the night sit tight. And keep on rolling rolling. Looking for that twenty. Then we know we're golden. Others have them a life. We keep on rolling rolling. Don't need social troubles. We're good just slaying goblins".
Overall, Master of the Flying Guillotine is a fun little nerdy azz album that doesn't really fit into the whole juggalo realm. Most of the tracks aren't really that great but a few stand out depending on your favorite style of music. You don't necessarily have to be a juggalo or a nerd to enjoy this one although it would definitely help. Universal Air Stance brings in a bit of the techno genre, Battlefield brings back a bit of the 80s, and Amys Ghost includes some of the darker themes brought to us by Insane Clown Posse. It's got a bit of everything yet it's something I wouldn't recommend to anyone unless they're a diehard juggalo, because let's face it, Jumpsteady sucks.
