I think "South Pacific" has some great songs, but it has a happy ending with Rossano Brazzi's return.

The king dies at the end of "The King and I"? But the couple has to have gotten it on (the little death) and one has to die to be considered for this list.

Great Review... (Reply to this comment)

I wonder, would a couple of classic musicals: South Pacific and The King and I qualify in this category?

You're right-- no one dies... That kind of nixes my suggestion.

Tony Leung's exquisite wealthy Northern Chinese character dies in the movie? One of the difficulties of this list (beyond getting the links right) is that it's impossible to check endings.

I'm not sure it floats your boat, but Annaud's The Lover seems to fit your list... Anyway, I think it repays repeated viewing, and has that miserable ending plus lifelong erotic longing to boot. The novel (you've probably read it) is a remarkably compact work of confessional quasi-autobiography.

Thanks for the Ai no corrida shout out/quotation.

Great write-up-
