I can NOT stand this place. I have had the same experiences. I have used Spiegel for years and my parents did when I was young.
You may not believe this but when I was young..and that was certainly quite some time ago...like, in the 60's, when my parents used them, they were actually considered a discount catalog! Can you believe that? They sure are not now, are they? lol..
Anyway. Just letting you know that regardless of other comments, I have experienced what you have with them.

Very interesting and informative review! I've used the Spiegle Ultimate Outlet once and felt I got some great bargains, however it was for items I knew I wouldn't have to return. I do need to pay more attention to shipping charges though, seeing the "bargain" price change to a "non-bargain" price in black and white has opened my eyes. Thank you!

I actually decided not to order from the site when I saw the return policy. That is interesting that you didn't experience that when returning. I am glad to hear that, and might have to give it a try sometime. I am keeping an eye on some childrens bedding I know I'd want if it ended up on the outlet. Thanks for the feedback. :)

I use this site all the time and get my orders quickly. Never been charged the fees for returns that you listed. They are so much faster than Newport News. I flag the UPS driver down when I see him and hand him my package. There is no fee to do that.
I have ordered tee shirts for five dollars and pants for three dollars. Have you actually used this site and ordered something or just your first impression upon one visit?
I have saved 50% off toys and towels, bedding and pillows.
