The Bottom Line Pros:14 ounce resealable bottles, good energy rush, mild carbonation.
Cons: Can cause heartburn, some might not like the taste, 32 grams of carbs per serving.
Ive never been a fan of Mountain Dew. Sure it has an eerie green hue to it and you can find it almost everywhere but the taste never appealed to me. When I saw the new MDX Energy Soda I had to grab a couple of bottles to try out; some of the gym rats swore that this was a great drink that would give me a quick rush before a workout so I caved in and put my general dislike of the soda version aside. The odd thing about this drink is that its served in a fourteen ounce bottle - most sodas come in twelve or sixteen ounce sizes [or larger] so the bottle looks a little strange to start with. It can be resealed so if you dont finish it off you can save the rest for later but be warned, for the best taste you should drink it cold and before it loses its carbonation. Mountain Dew MDX Energy Soda This isnt marketed as a recovery drink or something that is going to give you super human strength - the words energy soda are all that the markers of this use to lure people into trying it. Those curious about the Power Pack logo on the front of the bottle will want to do some research about ginseng, taurine, guarana and maltodextrin; those are the big hitters in the drink but you cant leave out D ribose either. When you read over the ingredients of the drink you will find caffeine listed as well so if you are sensitive to quick energy drinks, this might be something that you will want to skip. You really have to know your herbs and additives to be aware of what you are drinking when you buy things like this - especially if you are using them on a regular basis. As far as taste goes, it has a very unique taste to it. The carbonation isnt strong or over powering but it is there. If you open the bottle and take a few drinks from it then reseal it, when you open it again most of the fizz is going to be gone but that doesnt mean that the overall taste changes - just that you get less of a zip when you are swallowing it. Id like to say that it tastes like Mountain Dew but it doesnt, well, it does taste a little like Mountain Dew but it tastes more like a lemon lime type of powered sports drink. There is a powerful sugar taste to it, something that gave me a nasty case of heartburn a few times but I chalk some of that up to the foods that I had before and while I was eating it. Sugar in general tends to give me heartburn so I try to avoid it when ever possible and go with an artificial sweetener. The bottle contains fourteen ounces of MDX, the recommended serving amount is eight ounce - so you get about two servings per bottle. This is something that you really have to read closely on the label. The nutritional values that are listed are per serving, not the total bottle so what you are seeing is per eight ounce serving although they do have a different panel for the complete bottle. Since it will be almost impossible to drink eight ounces of this once you open it, heres the low down on what you get from the entire bottle. First off, this has 201 calories, 65 milligrams of sodium, no protein and a whopping 56 grams of carbohydrates - all of which come from sugar. That was enough to completely freak me out but I took it in stride since I am taking a small break from my diet. Even though I am off my diet I still try to keep things in balance and not go over 75 grams of carbs a day and this drink took up a lot of my carbs. It does have a nice blend of energy herbs and additives but Id really have to think twice about drinking this in the future. I picked up four bottles to try it out, one of which is still in the refrigerator and chances are it will sit there until someone else drinks it. Now, if Mountain Dew made a sugar free version, I know Id pick it up from time to time since it does have a very lemon lime taste to it, something that I crave every once in a while. So far I have only seen these are the grocery store and at my gym; the grocery store is selling these for $1.29 and the gym had an introduction price for .99 cents - something I am sure will almost double when they get another order in. The rush that you get from it is nice but if you want something that is going to really make you shake in your shoes, stick with something that is blended specifically for energy - something with less carbs from sugar and something that is going to keep you going for more than thirty minutes. Thats the trouble with energy drinks that have a lot of sugar in them, you peak quickly then crash and feel like taking a nap. I am sure Mountain Dew will be selling these in a six pack format soon, from what Ive seen, people are drinking a ton of these to get some quick energy. Me, personally, Id go with Diet Rock Star or get a triple espresso for quick energy - that is unless they make a diet formulation of MDX. The Bottom Line This isnt a bad tasting drink, to me its better than regular Mountain Dew but the carbs are what will kill me if I drink this when I am in ketosis. I really hope that Mountain Dew will consider making a Diet or Lite version of this drink - I wouldnt buy it all the time but when I am craving something that is a little on the tart side chances are Id grab a bottle of this and drink it. The heartburn is also something that would get to me if I drank this, anything that contains a lot of straight sugar tends to do me in and this was no exception. I cant say that the beef and been burrito helped the situation but even when I drank this on an empty stomach, I still got some wicked heartburn. I would chalk it up to some of the other ingredients but Ive never had that type of a reaction from them when Ive had them in other drinks. This will give you a nice kick but you have to keep in mind that it does have a high carbohydrate count and you will have a nasty crash from this when it starts to wear off.
