"Live To Tell" is another one of those songs I could listen to FOREVER and just never get sick of it. Where in the name of heck did they come up with that melody? It's like parts of it are not even chords, but somehow they are.

"Steppin' Out" is another personal favorite of mine. I recall purchasing that album Night And Day several years back and thinking it was some of the absolute WEIRDEST sh!t I had ever heard in my life. Several times I have wanted to hear it again, just to see if it's really as weird as I remember it being. Of course I also was fond of the other single, "Breaking Us In Two", even if the verse was exactly the same as "Day After Day" by Badfinger.

Lemme see, what else was there? "Eye In The Sky", absolutely classic. I can TOTALLY see the Eeyore connection!

Must. Hit. Sack!

"I Melt With You" was a much bigger hit stateside. In fact, I thought it was the one song that had earned them the title of "one-hit wonder". Or am I wrong?

Either way, great lists that I'm thoroughly enjoying (thanks to years of education at the hands of numerous VH-1 Pop-Up Video and I Love The 80s marathons; pop culture professors at their finest)!!

Great job,
J.

I feel that I must take issue with the woefully low placement of Voices Carry even though I have not yet seen your top sixty choices. I can deal with Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic being placed in this group, in fact, I'm not sure it would make my top hundred 80's singles.

But Voices Carry is one of my personal faves - I even got to see 'Til Tuesday perform the song when they opened for HoJo at Concord Pavilion.

And Shadows of the Night! Let's hear it for big fat drums and wailing guitars... the Nazis were a freakishly odd choice though - not the image that I had in mind when I first heard the song

Send me that spreadsheet, I gots some sorting to do...

I've heard "Fascination" more times than I can remember, and yet you found a brand new way for me to hear that song. Doesn't it sound like it took about 3 dollars to record? The video and it's poor joke concept is totally laughable. . . and yet I love it all. I don't understand people who don't love Human League.

By the late 80's, I was in High School and had pretty much abandoned charting pop songs for Hair metal and classic rock. Still, I loved Neneh Cherri's "Buffalo Stance" not only for the great melody and beat, but also because she sounded like a chick who could kick yer azz. You could put an army of Poisons, Slaughters and Warrants against her and they wouldn't stand a chance.

I'm looking forward to the rest of this list, even knowing its probably not going to include any Loverboy, 38 Special or Village People going punk.

I can't figure out why the piano on #65 is so sonically delicious, but you're right. It's excellent.

I love Steppin' Out. Smooth . . . trippy . . . and very palatable.

Actually, I love reading stuff about the 80s. I was born at the very tail end of it ('88), but I've jumped into the wayback machine and gone back to enjoy this sort of thing . . . A LOT.

Bring on the next 20,
Jess

I must say, I can't believe you couldn't find the space for any hip-hop on your list. Despite the fact that the majority of hip-hop that charted during the Eighties did, indeed, suck, I was hoping there'd be a spot for...something. Ah well. You still rock. I shall proceed.

80. Alison Moyet might have gotten me started on my trend of falling in love with unattractive Brit female singers (Lisa Stansfield, Tracey Thorn, etc). Strangely enough, although I knew who she was, I didn't realize she was the lead singer of Yaz (who I always thought was male) until I was a teenager.

79. "Steppin' Out". This song is just so-cosmpolitan. It just makes me feel like getting dressed in a tux and strolling down the streets of midtown NYC at night.

77. Human League made some awesome singles, didn't they?

74. Best. Culture Club. Song. Ever. Too bad Boy George let his frocks completely overshadow the fact that he was such a good singer.

73. This song is an unheralded classic. I wonder if there was any romantic history between the two singers. It sure sounds like it. Extra points for including this over the God-awful "Lean On Me". Extra bonus points for mentioning "Situation #9".

72. "Come Go With Me"? Over "Seasons Change" and "Let Me Be The One"? Come on, Paul.

71. Sidebar: Was Prince on a roll in 1984 or what? "When Doves Cry", "Erotic City" and "Ice Cream Castles"? The latter two songs are why if I ever made a list like yours, I couldn't just stick to charting songs.

69. I don't know if Neneh Cherry had a posse back in Sweden. But did you know that Notorious B.I.G's second appearance on record was on her "Buddy X" remix?

68. I'm down with "Live To Tell". I remember when that video came out and because she was seated and wearing that flowered dress everyone thought she was pregnant.

65. You're right. Excellent, tasty piano.

64. See my comment title. I've always wanted to sing this song at karaoke.

61. It sucks when a band's worst single is their only one to chart, although MJG had TWO sucky singles as their only ones to chart. "In My House" never did it for me, but do yourself a favor and download "Boys", "Candy Man" and "All Night Long" from their debut album. They definitely had it all over Vanity 6.

Another awesome trip down memory lane. I wait with baited breath for the next twenty.

Dude!

I think you might have given me that cover on a mix CD of yours a ways back. I remember loving it... I'll have to dig it out and give it another listen.

Once again, fantastic song choices all down the line.

If you've never heard Fantastic Plastic Machine's cover of Steppin' Out, you're really missing out. Track down a copy immediately. I command you!

Anyhoo... can't wait to see what makes the rest of the list.
