TheHorrorMan's Top 10 Horror Non-Classics
Apr 22 '06
The Bottom Line These selections are movies not typically considered to be classics in the horror genre, but they are just as enjoyable as many of the so-called classics.
Being TheHorrorMan, you can imagine that I have seen more than my fair share of horror films. I have watched all of the obvious classics and own most of the horror genre on DVD that is available. For this list I will stray from the typical "greatest horror films" but instead focus on personal favorites that do not include films commonly referred to as classics such as HALLOWEEN, PSYCHO, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, etc. This is TheHorrorMan's Top 10 Horror Non-Classics!
10 WAXWORK (1988) Zach Galligan of the GREMLINS movies plays Mark, a wealthy college student who, along with some of his friends, is invited to a wax museum. The museum displays 18 of the most evil men of all-time ranging from Jack the Ripper to the Invisible Man. However, the museum hides a mysterious secret that Mark must uncover before it is too late for him.
9 BRAIN DAMAGE (1988) A man named Brian comes in contact with a worm-like creature named Aylmer who injects Brian with a narcotic to give him the high of his life. However, in exchange for the drug Aylmer expects something in return. To avoid a harsh withdrawal, Brian must find victims so that Aylmer can eat their brains. The real struggle is Brian's own addiction vs. committing murder. Great laughs from the director of BASKET CASE.
8 BUBBA HO-TEP (2002) From Don Coscarelli, director of PHANTASM, comes a new cult classic featuring Bruce Campbell of THE EVIL DEAD as an elderly Elvis. Teaming up with a fellow nursing home resident, Elvis must battle an evil mummy who has come to the nursing home to collect souls to make himself stronger. It truly is the King vs. the King of the Dead!
7 TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992) Created as a prequel to the TWIN PEAKS television series, FWWM concerns the final week of Laura Palmer's life. A sense of surrealism and disturbing imagery make for one scary thrill after another. The film proves that there is a darkside to everything, everywhere, and everyone. Fans of the series won't be disappointed.
6 PARENTS (1989) Bob Balaban's PARENTS is unique in the fact that the movie is pretty much seen through the point of view of a child. Michael has just moved into a new a house in a new town with his parents played by Randy Quaid and Mary Beth Hurt. Everything seems peaceful until Michael begins to suspect his parents are cannibals. Funny, but chillingly clever in scares.
5 HOUSE (1986) Roger Cobb, a Vietnam veteran turned horror novelist, moves into his deceased aunt's house only to find out the frightening truth about his new home where his son mysteriously disappeared prior to Roger moving in. With the help from his next door neighbor, Roger must try to rid the house of demons and find his son before the house takes Roger himself.
4 AMERICAN GOTHIC (1988) Upon being released from an institution after losing her baby in a drowning accident, Cynthia and her friends take a small plane to go camping. Forced to land the plane on a deserted island because of aircraft problems, the group is left stranded at a small house with a family who literally kills together. Some great kill scenes and a great ending make the film.
3 SUBSPECIES (1991) Now this is a great vampire film that focuses on the battle between good and evil. Radu, one scary looking vampire, is the evil brother who captures three women doing research for school. Stefan is the good, human-looking vampire who tries to rescue the girls from Radu's clutches. Meanwhile the two vampires are after the same thing... the mysterious bloodstone!
2 DOLLS (1987) Caught in the center of a bad storm on the "longest night of the year," a family of three and three other strangers find themselves stranded at an old mansion with an elderly couple. The man of the house is a dollmaker, but these dolls are not cute and cuddly and do not take kindly to adults who no longer have a fun childish side.
1 NIGHTBREED (1990) Based on his novella CABAL, NIGHTBREED is Clive Barker's movie about a place called Midian "where the monsters live." Aaron Boone has been under the care of Dr. Philip Decker after experiencing some strange dreams about the place. However, Decker has a dark side as well. With slight religious elements and an intense apocalyptic ending, NIGHTBREED is a monster movie any horror fan would dream of. The question is, who really are the monsters? Decide for yourself.
Notice I did not include films listed on my Top 10 Favorite Horror Movie list such as Dead Alive. If I did, DEAD ALIVE and other non-classics from that list would be included here accordingly.
