Thank you, Nicole. It's good for me to revisit this essay from time to time to realize anew just how far my daughter has come! I'm grateful. Sometime I will have to share a bit more about the amazing time when she first began talking. It happened during an Easter weekend!

I have but one thing to say: Praise the Lord! Your experience was touching and I found your suggestions very helpful. Judging from your reviews, you have done an excellent job sharing language with your daughter.

Thanks, Erin! I also went to a speech therapist as a child, at least for part of my first grade year. I still have what I call a lazy "l" -- when I'm tired, I still tend to say my "l" more like a "w" sound, especially at the beginning of words. Speech is a fascinating thing. We're so thankful our little one is doing so well too!

I'm so glad Sarah has overcome her speech difficulties with the help of the therapists and of course her wonderful parents! My brother Benjamin was a late talker, close to three before he said much of anything at all, but then all at once he started talking a blue streak. He and I both went to speech therapists for several years, though - I was in second or third grade before I could pronounce the letter "r"! Anyway, glad Sarah has progressed so wonderfully!

I'm hearing more and more instances of late talking children, which is one reason I thought it might be helpful to share this. I'm so glad your grandson is doing well now! And how neat that he likes Koko! :-)

My grandson was a late talker by our standards. We were all very concerned. We used signing. He's fine now and is particularly interest in the book about Koko the GOrilla who signs

Thanks, Kath. I guess you are used to the sounds of little chattering voices every day! :-)

I love hearing my daughter talk. When it seems nonstop, I just have to remind myself of how grateful I am that she's come this far and is doing so well!

You have a great day too!

Interesting! (And wow, six languages!) There are definitely children who, like you did, just don't talk because they don't have anything to say/aren't ready to, for whatever reason.

What I've been discovering though, as I've read and observed, is that there seems to be a higer incidence of speech delay and speech disorders than there used to be. I honestly think this could be related to environmental factors and immunizations, among other things.

My daughter loves to observe the world, but not being able to talk was a huge frustration for her. Once she began to talk, she struggled mightily to be able to form different sounds, which definitely indicated something problematic was going on. So in our case, getting help was a real Godsend.

Thanks for commenting!
