Finally Made It To A Meet and Greet
May 08 '06
The Bottom Line Food, folks, and fun. Nice to have met you all!
I've been writing for epinions for ages... since 1999, in fact. In internet dog years, that's almost half a decade! Not sure why I missed the first NYC Meet and Greet but I damn sure wasn't going to miss this one. I lassoed my friend John into meeting me down in Times Square and showed up to see what there was to see.
I was nervous. I'd never met any other epinioneer face to face before. But yet I'd read some very personal accounts and emailed many people - so I felt like I knew people. People from far flung cities, people with very different lives and viewpoints that shared only one thing... a passion for this little site. And in a nutshell, that's what the power of the site (and the Internet) is all about.
I met Bryan Carey, who I've been reading for 5 years. Beer drinker and civil libertarian, he was just as I'd imagined.
I met Jo.com, who was extremely nice and interesting. And seemingly nonplussed by the fact that more people have read her epins than live in the city of Philadelphia AND in Boston common. Pretty amazing.
I met the category leads of Online Stores and Services Joubert and Amykhar, and the beautiful kids of some of the other CLs.
I met many people - some who had taken the bus and planes and trains... and they all wanted to share in the day. Some shared stories of how the site helped them get through rough times. Some told funny stories about their daily lives.
I had a few beers (too many) and some good food. I managed to hoard a full set of epi dolls (FINALLY) and grab a tshirt.
Later, after I'd collected my thoughts, I emailed Lorrie about her epinions flock...I think that our content is what helps power eBay into the next generation of their business.
Mostly, I was struck by the loyalty and kinship that I saw and felt. Continue sharing your viewpoints and passion, folks - it truly does make a difference.
