See 'em! (and the DVD extras on many of them, too)

Foreign films (Reply to this comment)

In addition to the first two films mentioned that are classified as "2004 films" that I saw in 2005, there is an Irish film (for which I needed subtitles), a French, an Israeli one (in Hebrew and German), the South African one that received an Oscar as "best foreign language film" (in Soweto patois, which is based on Zulu), and a Palestinian movie (in Arabic). That's few? I don't think so, especially considering how few movies not in English get much release here (for instance the one from India called to my attention, which did not play theatrically here and is not available on DVD here).

Red Eye, rather, is very intense and I think you'll enjoy it. So many I haven't seen, but Downfall is one of the best. Doesn't seem like many foreign movies on your list.

I'm surprised that I have seen so many, since none have been on cable and I'm between DVD-by-mail servers. I'm anticipating many non-2005 movies once my return to Netflix occurs in early June.

Somewhat surprised at the movies you haven't seen yet, but many of those are quite good and worthwhile. It should help you through the SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER season.

take a nice break and come back fully equipped to write.

Sigh! Atleast you can see the movies. Here in Calcutta, not even 1% of them make it.

Hey Steve, what do you feel about Disney musicals? Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid are among my all-time favourites.

And LOTR, well the problem, as my professor says is, you either like it or you dont. My ma prefers Harry Potter and my father loves LOTR. As for me, I was madly in love with the book and the films, well they will always have a special place for me.

Hey, have a nice trip.

I am inclined not to consider a 400-minute mini-series a movie, though you made me want to see it.

I felt that I was getting close to having seen what seemed likely contenders for my list, but haven't seen any additional ones for two weeks, am going away again, and "Syriana" is not going to be released on DVD until 6/20.

For those of us who don't live in LA and NYC and spend the last week of the calendar year going to movies opened for award consideration, the calendar year of "release" is highly artificial. It is, however, arguably the twilight of 2005 (though I have 2002, 2003, 2004 lists yet to do), so I can leave my perch to survey the "2005" awards battlegrounds. No?

I hadn't even heard of "15 Park Avenue." When it comes my way (i.e., to cable)....

I thought that "The Constant Gardener" was like "Munich" in being (1) too long, (2) too schematic, and (3) using a questionable structure of flashbacks (though those in CG worked better than those in "Munich," I thought).

I thought that the Kenyan doctor was excellent, but had difficulty believing that Tessa would wed or be in love with Justin. César Charlone's cinematography is, however, excellent.

though to me The Constant Gardener was the best movie last year, hands down.

Say Steve, have you watched the movie 15 Park Avenue by Aparna Sen It is indeed an excellent movie, certainly one of the best I saw in 2005. I am not sure if it was released in the US, but you might find a copy of the DVD.

Whoa, and 2006 feels over already. Then again, I've hardly seen anything from 2006 I'd want to see again-- we have to wait for the usual bumper crop of fall/winter releases...

Lots of overlap with my list, and I do think your ranking will change when you see The Best of Youth, which you should do... tomorrow.

Indeed, this was a most violent year for good movies-- but what else is new?

Great List (Reply to this comment)

Ive seen many of your picks and they were great. Particularly "A History of Violence" I really felt that it was going to be failing in depth but it was quite a film. The Ending was bloody good I tell ya, specificaly William Hurt's brief but powerful showing.

Nice Job,

A Few of which surprised me..but not too much. You have demonstrated a remarkably diversified taste in most things. (Except maybe politics - that's pretty consistent. Down with GWB.)
