A real page out of history - almost like the Red Badge of Courage. Cool!

My great----- uncle won the Confederate Medal of Honor at Peachtree Hill just outside of Atlanta. He went down still waving the flag, and he wasn't even a designated flag carrier. All the others before him had been shot down and so he grabbed it and charged forward. He got pretty damn far with it, too.

My family has some connection with duelling being outlawed in Mississippi. I've spent the last half hour trying to find the details online, but couldn't. I'll get with my mom and put up some info for the rest of the world.

Sha-bow, kind of like shadow. The guys in Calif don't know how to pronounce it, apparently. The Scots-English pronounce it Sha-but. Again, illiteracy is a terrible thing. ;>

Cognac - brandy - Armagnac - Oui, monsieur. My family relations who failed to make it to the promised land make Armagnac.

it's the French pronunciation of "Chabot" rather than like the lake in the Oakland hills?

BTW, only brandy from the Cognac region can be "cognac" (like "champagne"). There is French brandy that is not "cognac."

Eh? Madame !

Gill's the girl and Tony's the boy-- confusing these screen names, aren't they ?

I was once under the illusion that Travelgall was a woman, must have been the kilt !

Anyway, I enjoyed the read whatever sex I am.

Best wishes,

Gill (The girl).

Hanging - yes, pretty sure. Chateigneraie called him a m*f* in front of the whole court, on behalf of the King, who had started the rumor.

I love stuff like this. I wish I could trace my bloodline that far back.

Thanks for the great read.

With friends like this, who needs enemies? (TM)

You sure hanging was in store for the defeated noble? I thought this was reserved for the commoners (a minor technicality, or course, pun intended.)

You know, Doc, that review should be dedicated to you since I know you have this thing for guys in plate armor and wielding sharp swords. :>

My pleasure, Barbara. I always enjoy reading your travel reviews and though I seldom write one myself, I've been quite a few places in Europe and N America. I have some great memories of the Versailles gardens and palace and a bunch of other places I've been. My personal favorite travel site is Bavaria with the wonderful picturesque castles and towering Alps. It's just like you're in the middle of a postcard.

All the best and keep up the review writing! To the next 400... and the next!

I knew there was a reason I considered you a friend...:)

What an incredible historic happening. Sometimes I feel as if I lived a previous life in France but you really do have amazing historic ties.

Thanks so much for sharing that most fascinating bit of history..I wonder if the duel was held at the Place de Voges, where many duels were fought in Paris..

And a giant Merci Beaucoup for coming to the write/off-party
