Pros:concise, thorough, clear
Cons:based on Red Hat
The Bottom Line: Linux beginners should definitely consider buying this book as well as intermediates because it's a great reference.
This book taught me a lot about Linux when I was first starting out. It covers a lot of topics from simply installing Linux, explaining Linux and how it works, the command line, setting up and using internet/intranet services like httpd and ftpd, an introductory course on TCP/IP, firewalling and routers to name the core subjects which stand out in my mind. It is written clear enough so beginners can understand it without having to struggle as well as being thorough on most subjects. It comes with Red Hat 7.0 and focuses mainly on Red Hat use which is a down side to this book but since it is a beginner oriented book, Red Hat is a fine distribution for beginners although I prefer another distribution. Although this book is geared towards Red Hat users, it still applies just as much to other distributions. The book is a great read as well as a good reference book and I strongly suggest that all beginners and intermediates that are a little shakey to definitely read this book.
