Pros: Very easy to use and learn; it's free!
Cons: For it's purpose, nothing at all!
The Bottom Line: It's simple and very basic...not much more is required of it than to simply make a note. What else can a person ask for?

| supernova7's Full Review: Microsoft Notepad |
I have now had my computer for about 1 1/2 years.
During this time, I have learned a little about the internet and a little about even HTML. Thanks to really great web sites such as HTML Goodies, (thanks Joe Burns), I have begun on my first web page. UNBELIEVABLE!
I have learned about various tech supports (some great, most not so great). I have also learned about nothing really being free on the net. ;^) I have also learned about writing for the Internet being not the same as writing in general on a piece of paper.
NOW I AM GETTING INTO WINDOWS '98 ACCESSORIES.
More specifically, I am learning about the little accessory program, so little in fact, that I cannot even imagine anyone having to write an Epinion on it. It came pre-loaded with a whole lot of other little goodies which I haven't tried yet.
HOWEVER... Here goes.
1. WHAT IS NOTEPAD?
Notepad is not a word processor. Do you understand? It is not a word processor any more than it is a food processor! RATHER, IT IS A TEXT EDITOR. What ever that means.
Actually it's a sometimes little known accessory program found when the user clicks on the start menu button; slides up to "Programs"; and then swings across to "Accessories". Then, (drum roll please), just go on down the menu until you come to "notepad". There you are!
More specifically, it's a program which enables the user to write text in the open window. Then the user can simply delete, correct, cut, paste, and copy the text to where needed.
2. WHAT ELSE DOES IT DO?
Well, not a whole lot more but then it's really not supposed to do much than what I already explained. Seriously, there are a few more things which it does so please continue to read.
First of all, it is very easy to learn. (I learned it didn't I?) It is very, very basic and even easier to use. It is also very small not taking up hardly any amount of memory.
It's menu tool bar across the top of the window contains some very basic categories such as: file, edit, search, and help. That's it! Unlike Microsoft Word which reminds me of the space shuttle console with so many items, Notepad is quite, how shall I say, plain?
It has a fully functional font selection as any Microsoft word processor but guess what, you can only select one font per document. I kid you not. If you selected one word in let's say, Black Arial - you've selected the entire text in Black Arial. Whether you want it or not. Neat huh? :^)
You can also word wrap your text (I would if I were you) so that the text line will reach it's default end of the line and wrap to the next line. (NO RULERS HERE FOLKS OR MARGIN SETS EITHER). Unless you select this feature, there is no telling where you'll end your line.
This program is so, so small that it's Helps program needs help. It only has a total of five Topics in it's helps list. And they aren't very large in themselves.
3. WHAT IS IT'S PRIMARY USE FOR ME?
Not too long ago I was going through the various employment web sites looking for, you guessed it - a job. As the visitor or potential employee needs to submit an on line resume, I soon found out that I would time out if I tried to type my resume online. I saw that there was a space for a "cut and paste resume" feature but being a very new newbie to computers and the internet, I'd hurridly resumed trying to type out my resume. I NEVER MADE IT PEOPLE.
Not long after that I began to get interested in Epinions and noticed that some reviews made mention of the fact that they could write their reviews on the Microsoft Notepad Accessory program then "paste" it online into the online form space provided. AH HAH!
Ever since, I have cut and pasted many things, even my newly designed web page - written in HTML. Oh Glory! However, I haven't found any other more useful functions for which I can use Notepad except making my shopping lists; To Do Lists; keeping small job logs, simple fax cover sheets and anything for which I would normally use a hand held notepad or scratch piece of paper.
4. WOULD I RECOMMEND IT? SURE WHY NOT?
It's small handy program to use when you don't have much to write or many times, nothing of too much value. I was surprised when I saw it on Epinions as a product to review. I am glad it was free with the rest of the Windows'98 pre-loaded programs. I can't imagine anyone paying a penny for it. But hey, what the heck? It's free, how much do you want?
5. CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Of course, I'd especially appreciate a word count so I can keep count of the words which I've already used in writing this Epinion. (It seems too long already).
By the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL OUT THERE AND MAY GOD'S BLESSINGS AND PROTECTION BE UPON YOU ALL!
