Appliances and warranties worth it or not

The Bottom Line Depending on what the company has to offer and what you are buying I'll get them 75% of the time
I've been working for Sears selling appliances for the past two years. What may seem a short time for most people out there I have learned a lot about what I sell. And of course one of the things I have to know about are protection agreements. I've heard every kind of stories out there that you can think of from simple leaks to parts falling off to fire work shows and full on blazes. There is not one day that goes by where i have a customer call up and say "I bought my machine from a couple of days ago to a couple of decades ago." First thing i always suggest is to look at what warranties your machine has by looking in your manuals or if you are buying a new machine ask your sales associate if you can read the manual before you buy it. Reason for looking at it is because recently warranties have changed.
Depending on manufactures they are mostly one year now. Only things that keep the normal warranties are higher end products such as Kitchenaid, Kenmore Elite, GE Profile, Jennair, and other high end products. Examples of changes are in refrigerators they basically all now have a one year warranty on everything except on sealed compressors and the same thing with air conditioners. But the higher end kept the warranties on the fridge seal on the doors and cracks on the internal and external casement.
Dishwashers are the same way. Your base models and mid line on Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Frigidaire, GE only have a one year warranty. On the other hand your Bosch, Kitchenaid, Kenmore Elite, GE Profile and Jennair up hold to the old warranty standards such as one year labor coverage, from 3 through 5 years on your tray depending on manufacture against rust and 5 to 10 year warranty on the motor and seal, and limited life time on the tub from cracks or rust on the stainless steel tubs.
Now the last kitchen appliance is your cooking appliances. Ranges from slide in to drop in and free standing stoves along with your wall ovens and cook top all basically have one year manufacture warranty and labor as well with everything else just the high end brands again keep their original warranties which are some times longer then a basic one year warranty on the circuit bored to the power housing for the stove and if its a glass top. The length on them vary on the manufacture from 2-5 years.
Then the final large appliance are your laundry machines. The most heavily and hardest working appliance of all. Their warranties are the same as the rest depending on the grade of the machine for example our galaxy washer and dryer....They only carry a 90 day warranty our only machines that do. but the rest of our conventional machines all carry the basic warranty. Oh yea this affect any one who sells appliances not just sears by the way so just to let you know. But your conventional machines all carry a one year manufacture warranty against defects in workman ship and material and one year labor. Then your higher end again carry the same warranty as b4 which range from life time warranty on their baskets again rust and defects then 5 year on the motor.
But with all that said no matter where you go to buy appliances you will be asked if you want to buy their service plan which range from extended warranties to replacement agreements to maintenance agreements. Each one vary depending on where you buy them from. They should all have brochures that describe their plans. Read them and if they don't have them on the sales floor ask them to tell you everything about them! See what they cover and offer beyond just a normal warranty such as food loss, to cosmetics, to lemon guarantees, also replacing if they can't fix it and also how many times till they replace it, and surge protection also see if they cover trip charges and shipping fees and also a very important part.... customer instruct such as you calling out a service guy to find out that you weren't using the machine correctly. As well find out about the cancellation policy on it! And like I've said that the beginning of this i have customers every day calling and saying their machine is broken. The age come from a wide range from days to decades old.
P.S. To those who have had bad experience with our service at Sears, first thing you should do is contact your sales person because trust me we still get hit up for a canceled or returned sale for up to a year after the purchase and we don't like paying back money we already got paid for since we work straight commission!
