What Should I Bring To School?: The ABC's of College Necessities

You should only bring what you need. What you think you need may not actually be what you really need!

Thanks - it really didn't take too much time because this was actually an update/rewrite of a composition I wrote back in college for an English class.

My husband laughed at the list because although he went "away" to college, his university was simply located on the other end of the city he lived in. He simply took his laundry home or called mom if he was sick or ran out of q-tips. :)

That definitely does depend on the college or university.

I never had one at any of the colleges I attended. Each campus was walkable and the larger ones had shuttles or buses which you could take to get from one end to another.

I found a car to be a necessity at two of the colleges I attended. I was in Air Force ROTC when I was at Vanderbilt but the detachment was based at Tennessee State University. This meant getting across Nashville and was problematic without a car. I begged rides constantly to solve the problem but I hated doing that. Even if I had a car, they weren't allowed on campus for freshmen.

At the University of Louisville, I was a student before they built their new stadium which meant going out to the Fairgrounds and Freedom Hall for football and basketball games which were required since I was in the band.

I know many people who did have bikes at all three schools but I did just fine without one.

Thanks for the comment!

I guess this depends on the college. At Oregon State EVERYONE had a bike. Our campus was too big to get to one side to the other without one. But my niece just graduated from UC Irvine and never needed one.

Nice list,

Peggy

She is looking at a lot of smaller colleges in New England. She doesn't want to go too far from home, but still wants to go "away."

A lot of laundry facilities have gone to smart cards or even requiring credit cards. However, quarters are still essential for college life. How else will you eat out of the vending machines in the basement of the library? Tuna and egg salad sandwiches out of a vending machine at 2am were a staple of my college life, at least.

This was a great list of items that all college students should have on hand to make life necessary. It was Very Helpful indeed.

Where is your niece considering going?

I know that at the last two colleges I attended, I didn't use the college laundry facilities and went to an off-campus laundromat instead. So, I'll admit that I have no idea how the on campus laundry situation worked at UofL or UVA...

We unfortunately had a problem with our washer here at the house a couple of months ago and an even bigger problem getting it taken care of which required a local laundromat as well.

The non-college affiliated laundromat here required quarters. Had I been thinking more clearly, I would have just taken the stuff to the dry cleaners where they will wash clothes by the pound. I think it would have come out in the end to be about the same amount of money and I wouldn't have had to fold anything!

included a great list here. My niece is looking at colleges and I have discovered that one thing has changed - laundry. The colleges she is looking at no longer have coin operated laundries, everything runs off of your ID/cash card. There is no more hiding quarters from roommates. Of course on a Sunday night when change machines were empty an enterprising (and prepared) student can't earn some extra money by selling quarters ;->
