Sweep Me Off Of My Feet - The Ten Best Romance Movies

Dec 17 '06

The Bottom Line This chick always reserves the right to alter, destroy, mutilate, and spindle this list.

It's almost Christmas which means that sentimentality will be running at an all-time high (for me). After the last present is opened and the kids (read - child and husband) are off doing their own things - I turn to my movies for a good dose of romance (in a nostalgic way).

What makes a movie romantic for me?
* Memorable quotes
* Hot - but very flawed men. By the way - hot doesn't mean "pretty". I like pretty men but usually, they're not flawed enough.
* Music that swells in all the right places ;).
* Chicks in lead roles who are witchy and wild and misunderstood. Goody-two-shoes are sleep material yawn.
* Weather used in the most inappropriate ways ;)

What If I Don't Like Your List?
Get your own.

The Top Ten

1 Moulin Rouge (2001)

What It's About:
A misunderstood chick - Satine (Nicole Kidman), a down on his luck vagabond writer - Christian (Ewan McGregor), a love between them that is kooky, misunderstood, romantic and then later - tragic. Baz Luhrmann directs a larger than life cast in a movie-musical that never lets the audience forget how much we love and adore our romance and heartbreak.

Memorable Quotes:
* The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
* The show must go on, Satine. We're creatures of the underworld. We can't afford to love.
* Outside things may be tragic, but in here we feel its magic.

Memorable Music:
The whole frickin soundtrack - but most specifically, Come What May and One Day I'll Fly Away.

2 The Notebook (2004)

What It's About:
A well-to-do southern chick - Allie (Rachel McAdams) and a boy from the other side of the tracks - Noah (Ryan Gosling) fall in love...are separated by well-meaning family...come back together again...and then are separated by forces stronger than their love sniff. Or are they?!?!? This Nicholas Sparks novel turned screenplay is romantic, lusty, and heartbreaking.

Memorable Quotes:
* Behind every great love is a great story.
* The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that's what you've given me.
* Do you think our love can make miracles?

Memorable Music:
Allie Returns, Our Love Can Do Miracles.

3 Titanic (1997)

What It's About:
James Cameron's three hour epic isn't one I can watch from start to finish yet because of the lust, tragedy, and chemistry of the actors, I find myself attracted to it in the must-stop-and-see-the-train-wreck kind of way. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were spicy hot - who can forget the hand on the inside of the fogged car?! To this day, I always convince myself that the movie will turn out differently. JACK WILL LIVE! HE'S GOT TO LIVE!!!

Memorable Quotes:
* I love waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen or, who I'm gonna meet, where I'm gonna wind up.
* A woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets.
* Jack, I want you to draw me like one of your French girls. Wearing this...

Memorable Music:
My Heart Will Go On, Rose, Unable To Stay, Unwilling To Leave.

4 A Walk to Remember (2002)

What It's About:
The daughter of a minister - Jamie (Mandy Moore) - and the popular boy from the wrong side of the tracks - Landon (Shane West), find themselves drawn to each other in a I-hate-you-but-want-you-sort-of-way. Here's yet another Nicholas Sparks novel brought to the big screen - and if you've read the book - you'll still watch this movie over and over again hoping that someone has changed the inevitable. sniff.

Memorable Quotes:
* You have to promise you won't fall in love with me.
* How can you see places like this... and have moments like this and not believe?
* Our love is like the wind. I can't see it, but I can feel it.

Memorable Music:
Only Hope, I Dare You To Move, Cry.

5 Waking the Dead (2000)

What It's About:
This sleeper film is based on a novel by Scott Spencer and features hot guy Billy Crudup and before-I-was-too-thin Jennifer Connelly as lovers caught up in differing political passions. It's the passionate and sometimes out of control liberal-idealist vs. the introverted and cautiously moderate male political candidate wannabee. This movie tugs your emotions everywhere - you can't help yourself - you want to jump in and protect the relationship. Nooooooooooooooooo!

Memorable Quotes:
* Sometimes love has a life of its own...
* Sometimes, meaningless gestures are all we have.
* We will never be apart. We may be at each other's throats or we may be separated by 5,000 miles, but we'll never be apart.

Memorable Music:
Snow Come Down.

6 The English Patient (1996)

What It's About:
I'm a sucker for period pieces. Told through a series of flashbacks, Almásy (Ralph Fiennes) and the very married Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas) are caught up in a world on the verge of war while at the same time, dealing with their lusty, passionate feelings (and action/reactions) to each other. We can't let war get in the middle of love my friends! But alas...

Memorable Quotes:
* I just wanted you to know: I'm not missing you yet.
* I promise, I'll come back for you. I promise, I'll never leave you.
* Every night I cut out my heart. But in the morning it was full again.

Memorable Music:
Szerelem, Szerelem, Aria from the Goldberg Variations, Lullaby for Katharine.

7 The Princess Bride (1987)

What It's About:
Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) doesn't know what she has until the day she finds out that her sweet farm boy (Cary Elwes) has been taken to a far away land and killed. Grief-stricken, she agrees to marry the evil King Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), but before she can, a group of Pirates kidnaps her and she's forced to confront her feelings for the King and her one true love.

Memorable Quotes:
* Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die.
* Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.
* There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours.

Memorable Music:
A Happy Ending, Storybook Love.

8 The End of the Affair (1999)

What It's About:
Another period piece set in the 1940's and based upon the novel by Graham Greene . Novelist Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself wildly attracted to his publisher's wife Sarah (Julianne Moore). Neither one of them can keep their hands off of each other and unfortunately, jealousy, misunderstandings, and fate cause a wedge between the lovers.

Memorable Quotes:
* You have to understand. I'm jealous of everything that moves. I'm jealous of the rain!
* Love doesn't end just because we don't see each other.
* Pain is easy to write. In pain we're all drapply individual.

Memorable Music:
The First Time, Sara Dies.

9 Dangerous Beauty (1998)

What It's About:
Veronica Franco (Catherine McCormack) and Marco Venier (Rufus Sewell) are childhood friends who love each other but are kept apart by economics. Marco is expected to marry a woman with appropriate assets (pun intended), and Veronica lacks in that department. As she faces a life of heartbreak, she listens to her mother's advice and becomes a courtesean. As the political climate of the 16th century shifts, the age-old occupation she has chosen, comes under fire and she is arrested and tried as a witch. This is what happens when men find you unforgettable I guess....

Memorable Quotes:
* It's the wanting that keeps us alive.
* Desire begins in the mind.
* It must be interesting to be in a room full of men, most of whom you've seen with their pants down.

Memorable Music:
The First Kiss (Veronica's Theme), Veroncia And Marco.

10 Love Story (1970)

What It's About:
A mean rich and snotty father - Oliver Barrett the III (Ray Milland) has certain expectations surrounding his namesake number IV (Ryan O'Neal) that does not include a poor, Brooklyn, music-major chick - Jenny (Ali MacGraw). They defy him - run off and get married and - well...sniff.

Memorable Quotes:
* What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful and brilliant? That she loved Mozart and Bach, the Beatles, and me?
* You look stupid and rich.
* You know, Jenny, you're not that great looking.

Memorable Music:
Sonata In F Major, Snow Frolic, Skating in Central Park.
