Pros: Presents snacks well, doesn't absorb smells
Cons: Difficult to get something on the bottom if jar is full.
The Bottom Line: Very large mouth makes this a better choice for treats than other containers.

| xyzwyatt's Full Review: Anchor Hocking 2 Gallon Heritage Hill Jar |
My family comes home from school or work very hungry and immediately wants a snack. If I leave snack time to chance, they will pour a heaping bowl of snack food or over eat in some way spoiling their dinner. I thought for awhile about a solution and came up with snack in a glass.
I originally started out with a smaller jar and quickly realized it was too small to do the job for the size of our family so off I went in search of this very large 2 gallon jar that is the perfect size to fill up and forget about. The large jar can also accommodate a variety of snacks and there's enough room left to move things around to root around which is for some reason very a very comforting thing for a child to do while trying to decide which item to choose. I purchased a selection of single serving size treats and loaded it up in the jar. I didn't say anything, just waited. Everyone noticed it and got into it all by themselves. I didn't have to stop what I was doing to find a snack for the kids and they were content with the single serving size packages rather than pouring more that they would eat into a bowl. It also works out great for me when I'm in a hurry because I can just grab a bar on the way out and stick it in my purse. Here's a list of things that I rotate in my jar:
My Favorites Granola bars Chewy bars Cereal Bars Animal cracker packs Single packs of oatmeal Single packets of Breakfast instant milk mixes Lance or Austin crackers, cookies or wafers Fruit snacks Halloween candy Little Debbies or similar peanut or nut packs Seasonal ideas: Candy Cookies Plastic fruits for décor Christmas ornaments
Other: Flour/sugar Tea bags Paints and crafts Dog treats / animal food Whatever you normally put in a canister Fill with treats and give as a gift
This doesn't have to be used exclusively in the kitchen. It would look quite lovely in the bathroom with bath supplies or soaps. It's nice to know that the smell of fragrance items won't absorb into the glass like it would in plastic.
Benefits of glass I love the fact that this is all glass. I think glass if a very eco friendly product. I find that the smell of plastic seems to absorb into food but that doesn't happen with a glass jar. The jar also seals very well so food never gets stale in it.
A clear jar like this is timeless and can be used in any room. Stencils can also be applied to it to get the look you want.
The Lid I've had many cookie jars in the past but they always get chipped somehow. This is very thick glass so it does not chip. Just the lid alone weighs 1.75 pounds. It can ding and brush up against things yet it does not chip (kid tested). It does have a lip on the inside of the jar so it doesn't slide off if it's bumped. There is also a large knob on the top for a sturdy full hand grasp.
This does not have a seal around it so there's no suction like some jars have. Those jars get on my nerves because it makes it more difficult to get into the jar and longer seating the lid back on. Despite the lack of seal, it still closes tightly and keeps the air out.
Cleaning It does collect some dust and finger prints. I just hand hand wash mine due to the size but it is dishwasher safe.
Overall I have had my jar for over a year now and I'm pleased with the jar and the functionality of it. It still looks like new, keeps the food moving along, and keeps small items out of the pantry. I favor it most at 6 a.m. In the morning when I'm looking for snacks to put in the kids book bags. There's different jar sizes that can mixed with this for added décor and functionality. It's big, but bigger is better when you're sticking your hand in the cookie jar.
