Introduction

Cleaning shoes will let your shoes look better and last longer from my personal experience of more than ten years starting back in the early 90's.

What To Do When Cleaning

Rinse lightly or clean off the side of shoe; however, in extreme cases you may want to take the shoes outside and knock excess and I do not personally recommend cleaning off a lot of dirt into your sink. Tread of shoe should be rinsed free of dirt or mud or debris to keep the rubber of the shoe from dry rotting such as tires on vehicles if they are dirty. If you can only clean them inside at least clean the shoes in and / or a dish washing pan or a five gallon bucket if you have one handy.

Take out shoe laces and wash them in mild or gentle soap such as regular laundry detergent. If that does not help the white shoe laces then you can bleach them shortly approximately 15 minutes at the longest because bleach eats away a the fibers. As a side note the shoe laces will not last as long when bleached, so you might want to purchase an extra set of white laces in the case of breaking. Breaking has happened to me about a couple of times, so that is the reason I recommend using mild or gentle soap or laundry detergent without bleach or alternate bleach.

Now you should be ready to clean the shoe upper. Now the directions will vary by the material i.e. leather, synthetic, and suede. Leather should be cleaned either by some Kiwi saddle soap or a damp rag with some mild soap. Synthetic can be cleaned using a damp rag with mild soap. Suede should be cleaned by Kiwi suede cleaner after using a suede brush to get the loose dirt off.

You may use a toothbrush to get into crevices that are too small to get into with damp rag or Kiwi gel shoe cleaner.

What To Do When New or After Cleaned and Dried

When brand new spray the shoe with a water proofer if it is colorfast (meaning color will not run or discolor by using water proofer). As mentioned in previous shoe reviews especially the Adidas ClimaCool shoes do not over spray or it will have a starching effect making the fibers brittle to an extent because the entire shoe upper is a made of polyester. Depending on the quality of the suede may limit how much will be absorbed and may also have a starching result if over sprayed especially on the rougher quality suede (that does not feel as smooth as fine quality i.e. Nikes and Skechers) that comes loose and frays some like the old school Reebok Classics with poor quality suede.

When after cleaned and dried it is best to let them set inside so it will limit the amount of moisture from humidity being less inside as opposed to drying outside in the sunlight which may also bleach the shoes if left outside too long.

Hope you have learned something from this. Take care and save some money by cleaning shoes rather than buying a new pair every few months.
