Windows XP - Worth Upgrading?
Written: Nov 29 '01
Pros:Stable, Easy Installation, Fast Boots, Cool Menus, Remote Access
Cons:Price, Some compatability issues
The Bottom Line: If you are using W95/W98/WMe, I would definitely recommend, if you have W2000, I would recommend if the features out weigh the cost of the $199.99.
I have been using Windows ME and Windows 2000 in a dual boot configuration. When XP, came out I decided to take the plunge and scrap ME and 2000 and go to a single boot system. I have not been disappointed. It boots as fast as ME did and is alot more stable. I have not had a crash yet (30+ days). XP combines alot of the features found in ME with those in 2000. I would have preferred to upgrade to XP Home, however since 99% of my programs were installed in 2000 and I did not want to reinstall I went with the Pro upgrade (Can not use the Home version to upgrade windows 2000). I like the System Restore feature, driver roll back, multi media, ease of unzipping files, and the built in ability to burn CDs from explorer as well as from Windows Media Player. I have DSL, and as far as the connection setup, it was a breeze. I prefer the built in PPPOE to the one provided by Bellsouth and RASSPPPOE.
I have not had any game or software that has not worked, except for the version of Adaptac's Easy CD. I have installed, Office 2000, Quake 3 Arena, Team Arena, Unreal Tournament, Diablo 2, Traintown, Madden 2002, NHL 2001. In the event there is a problem, there is a compatability feature, where you just right click on the games short cut and select compatability mode and tell it to run the game as either W95, W98/ME or W2000.
Overall, I really like Windows XP. It is a major improvement over W98 and WME and I feel an imptrovement over W2000, especially with the features added and increased compatability with software/games. If you are using W95/W98/WMe, I would definitely recommend, if you have W2000, I would recommend if the features out weigh the cost of the $199.99.
