This machine does a good job BUT it has a VERY NOISY hard drive that wakes us up at night.

You are totally right. Having a Tivo just makes watching TV much more convenient. You can answer the phone, take a bathroom break, replay a segment you didn't understand, etc. Sadly, these devices haven't been getting widespread acceptance...but they should.

Wow, It reminds me of the old answering machines with tape where the tape would get wound up. The same with VCRs. I can remember the days when you had to go through millions of menus just to program one show. This is a cool product because you can select direct tv shows and put it right to your hard drive. The coolest part is you can stop and start shows at anytime. I want someone to get me this unit with satellie t.v. as a gift. This is a techies dream come true!!!
