Grand and more than a little stuffy...
Written: Nov 30 '01
Pros:Great historic building, fancy service.
Cons:Zero facilities for business travellers,
poor showers.
The Bottom Line: This place is ideal if money is no object, and you like historic buildings. For business travellers looking for basics like an internet connection or a decent shower, forget it.
If you reserve this hotel, make sure you tell the taxi driver to take you to "The Grand", not to the "Sofitel". There are two Sofitels in Amsterdam, and the taxis will invariably take you to the other downscale one (this happened to us).
Our first reaction to the Grand was "wow". You enter this wonderful courtyard right next to a lovely canal, and the hotel sprawls all around you, a lovely historic building. To top it off, the hotel was full up, so we were upgraded to a suite for the weekend. The room was huge, with the bathroom accessed through a private corridor, but the view was just of the neighbouring rooftops. We also stayed one night in a regular room, which had a great view of the canal and which in our view was better than the suite.
The hotel restaurant, La Roux, is one of the better ones in Amsterdam, with prices to match.
The main disappointments all had to do with the business amenities I have come to expect in the better hotels. The telephone handset dated back to the time when Graham Bell invented the telephone, there was no alarm clock/radio in the rooms, and they charged local calls at exhorbitant per-minute rates, which meant that I could not use my laptop. When will these hotels learn to become more business friendly? The other main disappointment was the shower, which was awful in the suite, but much better in the room. This hotel needs some serious refurbishment, particularly to the bathrooms and the hotel common areas.
Having said this, if money is no object, and you like old-style historic buildings, then the grand is certainly the place to stay in Amsterdam. But if you are a business traveller, I think there are better, modern hotels that cater more to your tastes and needs.
