The Bottom Line Be early and respectful!

When getting a recommendation from a teacher it is crucial that you start the process as soon as possible.

When
If your applications are due in February don't wait until January to ask the teachers to fill out the form. The teacher will probably still agree to do it but they will not be happy and there is a chance that they might not have enough time to finish.

So, as soon as you get to school start asking any of your junior year teachers if they would be willing to do your recommendation. The likelihood is that they will feel honored to have a role in helping you get into college.

If a teacher is very popular and you know that many of your fellow students are going be asking for his recommendation make extra sure that you are getting the paperwork to him or her as soon as possible. I would recommend giving the paperwork for a February deadline out before Thanksgiving.

Who
I would advise getting recommendations from the teachers that you did the best work and showed as much of your real personality as possible. If possible, get a recommendation from the teacher who taught the class that you are most passionate about.

For example, if you were in Drama class or Biology and you really showed your true colors in that class I would go with that one.

The ideal recommendation would come from a teacher who loves you and admires you. If you started out a class and really grew through the year then go directly to them.

For example, I started out AP History as a bad History student and wasn't doing well. I tried really hard, ask a lot of questions and ended up doing very well by the end of the year. That teacher, Mr. Lawhon, wrote my recommendation.

Teachers love students who show a love of learning and will be more than happy to recommend them.

It also can't hurt if they like you.

If you are kind to your teachers, treat them with respect and give them plenty of time to get the paperwork together you will get a glowing recommendation and a happy teacher.
