Warning reduction in Road Harzard Protection

Warning to all customers considering purchasing tires from Tire Rack. As we all know, roadhazards are a significant issue on our roadways, and I am sure that most of us purchase roadhazard protection with our tires. Unfortunately, I have recently had the displeasure of learning that Tire Rack's roadhazard program is no longer an adequate protection program, in fact, it can easily leave you stranded as if you had not purchased any protection at all. Back in April, I convinced my fiancé to purchase tires from Tire Rack instead of going to one of the local chain stores; and unfortunately, she hit a pothole on July 18, 2009. This pothole caused the valve stem to sheer which resulted in a slow air leak. As we were traveling to her parents house, this slow leak was not noticed until we arrived at our destination. Sadly, this loss of pressure resulted in the sidewalls of the tire being damaged to the point that a replacement tire was necessary. Since that time, I have been dealing with Tire Rack as they claim that the insurance company that backs up their Road Hazard Program will not cover this situation because it is the valve stem that caused the damage, and not the pothole that caused the failure of the valve stem. Even more frustrating, is the fact that representatives of Tire Rack have repeatedly told me over the past month that they agree with me that the damage should be covered but are powerless to do anything about it. In fact, this sort of damage would have been covered recently, but when they switched companies, they reduced the coverage. My point is this, if you want to have your tired covered, purchase your tires from someone else. I checked with National Tire and Battery, Sears, and Tire's Plus and all three companies road hazard programs would have covered this exam same loss. Tire Rack's end response to this was simply, we agree that this is wrong and we want to make it better. We regret that you felt the need to replace your tire already, but would like to offer you a replacement tire at ½ off. Thanks, but for the vast majority of us, waiting a month to get a replacement tire is not exactly an option if you feel like being a safe driver. I have been a satisfied Tire Rack customer in the past, but this situation has forced me to do what I can to warn individuals about this dangerous situation. The road hazard program on this site is not what you think it is, and if you want real quality coverage, go someplace else. I would have posted this a lot sooner, but I really wanted to give Tire Rack an opportunity to do the right thing in this case. Sincerely, Timothy Marlow
