Rule of ThumbAug 22 '06 (Updated Aug 23 '06) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Apply to a variety of schools, above, at the level and safety schools. Here is the process that you should take as a high school senior looking for colleges. Find 1-2 schools that are your "reach" schools. These are schools that you are under-qualified for. For example, if you have a 3.5 g.p.a, look for a school where the average is 3.75. Apply to very few of these schools. There is always the chance that you may get into your reach school but don't put much energy in these schools. Apply to at least 3 schools that are just your average. The SAT scores are the same, the g.p.a. are almost the same. They are more your speed and you will most likely be accepted. These "attainable" colleges are your best option. These schools are going to be good schools, ones that are filled with smart people who share a level of academic excellence that you are accustomed to. You will also most likely be accepted into all or most of these schools. So, I would apply to at least three of these schools. These schools will be your best match so invest the most time and money into applying here. Lastly, apply to at least 1 "safety" school. These are schools that you are overqualified for: your g.p.a. and test scores are higher than their averages. These schools are often much easier to get into because their standards are not as high. Safety schools are good because they offer a level of comfort to the high school senior. Because you are overqualified there is the almost guarantee you will accepted. So, in conclusion, apply to at least 1reach school, 3at the level schools and 1safety school, a total of five. That way you will leave your options open and apply to a variety of schools.
