WAX ON....WAX OFF....SHOW ME 'PAINT DA FENCE'..Aug 29, 2006 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line As they say in Japan: Sayonara! Ja Mata!! :D Is it just me, or were the words nemesis and samurai not introduced until after the 70's?? I grew up with Batman and Robin, The Brady Bunch, The Land Of The Lost, and The Monkees....When Johnny Socko came out with its bad dubbing, it was like a whole new world opened up for us, didn't it??? These days, words like Pokemon, Mewtwo, Pikachuuuuuu, and ninja are part of our kids daily lives!! They know more than we EVER could about Japanese art and the skillful detail of anime!!! Is it just me, or do all of the characters look alike?? It is so hard to tell one anime from the other unless you are a die hard fan or a collector of the toys, and cards of your favorite anime characters! Myself, I can't keep up! The Yu Gi Oh cards are still a hit with my 12 year old, and I wish I had invested in the company!!! I wanted to help others who are interested in Anime, but are not sure where to start, seeing as the storylines are usually series-based, and complicated. You really HAVE to pay attention, or you will get lost! These are brief, non-spoilers of a few animes that we have, or have rented/seen on cable. Some are suitable for kids, and some are not. That is a warning for those who think that all cartoons were written with kids in mind. Not in the anime world. Proceed with caution..... Here is the first in my series of beautiful and creative movies in the anime genre: * Transformers _ "...Transformers, robots in disguise!!" Do you remember hearing that everyday when your kids came home from school? With the same dramatic storylines that flow through most Japanese anime, transformers focuses on heroes, saving the world, and super strength...We still have the toys, action figures and dvds that these groundbreaking collector series robots came to life in! * Spirited Away ~ This is such a beautiful, breathtaking, award winning film that brings the beauty and majesty into what would normally be the average cartoon.. Chihiro is a girl who against her own wishes, is brought into the suberbs with her parents to live the perfect life. She accidentally wanders into a world that is controlled by witches, gods and monsters that turn humans into animals....She finds out that her parents are turned into pigs! She makes a friend in the strange land, a boy named Haku that heps her race against time to break the spell! Will she??? Gorgeous piece! Family friendly! * Yu Gi Oh, The Movie ~ Oh, if I hear one more time about which rare card my son is trying to hunt down...Will these trends ever stop?? Well, at least there are films with plots that encourage learning and paying attention! Based on both the tv series and card collection, this movie introduces you to Yugi, a kid picked on by other kids who finds a magic piece to a puzzle that awakens Anubis, an ancient evil Egyptian spirit, who takes Yugi into a world that makes him the game master..... * Ninja Scroll ~ It does seem like every movie in the genre has the same basic plotline, almost like American movies are infamous for the geek getting the cheerleader, good cop is really bad cop, etc..You really have to be interested in the art and the culture to absorb watching and talking about these films for years to come! Anyhoo, while the Japanese government is being overthrown by a powerful nemesis, a ninja for hire to save the government fights not only the evildoers, but a plague, demons, & national crises as well! Lucky for him, a beautiful ninja girl is there to back him up!! * Dragonball Z ~ Wow. OK. Dragonball Z is a television series that has movies and video games created from it. There are literally dozens of movies too choose from, to many to list all, so I will list my favorites. Again, follows a basic storyline like a cartoon soap opera and here are a few in my running: Super Androids 13, The Wrath Of The Dragon, Fortune Teller Baba Saga, Fushion Reborn, The Legend Of Super Saiyan, Bio-Broly, and Tree Of Might! These are in the same family of Pokemon, and collectors who love the series also cherish the action figures and cards! My boys love these guys! * Pokemon 2000 ~ Don't cry Pikachuuuuuu!!!!!!!! Mewtwo and Ash are on the way! Always battling the bad guys, this super troop in the Pokemon crew are out to save the world with the help of each other and special powers that fight the forces of lightening, fire and ice! Very cute, and child friendly! Still as popular as it was the day my kids started to collect the cards and trade them with a frenzy!! * Fullmetal Alchemist - The movie - The Conquerer of Shamballa ~ I consider this Japans version of Tales From The Crypt!! Black comedy about two brothers, Edward and Alphonse, who's mother passes and they wanted to raise her from the dead. After attempting unsuccessfully, Edward loses an arm and a leg, and Alphonses soul ends up in a suit of armour!! In order to restore themselves, they travel the country looking to fix their bodies! Very dark and weird, but if you like the strange and quirky plot, you will enjoy this film!! Not for kids! * Ghost in the Shell ~ Written again, with adults in mind, this cyborg/futuristic/cop story shows the year 2029, where a sensitive network is being hacked into by an evil nemesis called The Puppet Master! It is typical, and has an A.I. feel to it! Very interesting in a Back To The Future 2 kind of way!! * Perfect Blue ~ NOT FOR KIDS OF ANY AGE!! This beautifully written, complicated piece of art hosts a storyline of a gorgeous retired pop singer/actress who is stalked, yes stalked, by an obsessed fan. Their is a ghost from her past that keeps haunting her until the truth is revealed, and it is somewhat explicit and should only be viewed by adult anime fans! Enough said! Very artistic and creative! * Samurai X - The Motion Picture ~ If you love sword fights, martial arts, and revenge plotlines, this is the anime for you! Based on the story Magna by Noboru Watsuki, this samuraui who is branded with an X on his chest, sets out to avenge a war that started on his family, and Japanese Society following the years of the Meiji Restoration. Very complicated and action packed film. You must be an anime fan to enjoy this, or you will lose interest fast! Four friends who each have a superhuman talent (sounds a little like an upscale Power Ranger) brings the film to life with heroes and heartaches! To wrap it up, anime is best appreciated by those who see the art form, and love the culture and intensity that the talented artists put into their work. It is like sushi. Some love it. Some vomit it! It is not for everybody, but listed here are a few niblits on the side of your plate that you can try as appetizers! |
