Red Ball Express (Reply to this comment)
by fairportfan
Yes, the Red Ball was "integrated" - the drivers were 75% black; they were basically denied service in "real" combat units, because white soldiers and officers beleved that blacks were cowardly and unreliable, so they were put into "support" roles.
The only black units that saw any real combat in Europe were the 92d ("Buffalo") Infantry and the Tuskeegee Airmen (and i'd be *almost* willing to bet that the officers of the 92d were all or mostlyhwite).

LOL, thats a great characterization of Mr. & Mrs. Smith!
On Redeye, I agree that Cillian and Rachel are actors to watch, and I have sought out other films in which they appeared.
Wow, you see a LOT of films! Where do you get them all?

In regard to New Orleans evacuees in Houston a year ago, Barbara Bush said: "This is working very well for them. What Im hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality, and so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this is working very well for them."

Actually, Mr and Mrs Smith wasn't anything more than 2 stars at best. I had the misfortune of seeing it in theater when it came out - I was thoroughly sorry to have spent that admission money.
Red Eye was also a good choice out of the current movies - it stood out in the sea of mediocrity. Of course, after seeing "Notebook", I had a huge crush on Rachel McAdams :)
Excellent write-up, Stephen.

One of the delights was Cheney getting his own words thrown back at him. Another was Phyllis Montana LeBlanc: I can see why Lee kept going back to her.
It was also good to include praise for the Coast Guard and the RCMP.

I thought he was a paratrooper in Algeria, but I knew that he was a paratrooper.

Still haven't seen that Pitt/Jolie concoction, but sounds like a 3 star movie to me too. I can't remember seeing the Lombard one, but have wanted to.

When The Levees Broke... (Reply to this comment)
by thevoid99
I was just watching this again and I give it 5 stars. I thought it was very informative. Sure, Nagin & Blanco deserve some heat but at least they tried to defend themselves.
Still, it bugs me on how a little country like the Netherlands which is 65% below sea level that has great levees that can withstand anything yet we couldn't do the same for New Orleans.
The Barbara Bush comment was very offensive and what Dick Cheney & Condelezza Rice were doing during all of the troubles was disturbing.
It's been more than 10 years since I last visited that place, it's sad to see what it's become now.

Alain Delon (Reply to this comment)
by colonialpara
Did you know that he served as a French "Colonial" paratrooper in the later stages of the French Indo-China War?
He later went on to play Capitaine Phillipe Esclavier in LOST COMMAND, the 1966 movie about the French wars in Indo-China and Algeria.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005, directed by Douglas Liman, 3 stars) is a preposterous thriller, about as plausible as an Itchy and Scratch cartoon, but far more expensive.
The best explanation I have heard about this movie to date.
