I first became acquainted with Creme de Jamaica cigars when I received one of them in a sampler that was gratuitously tagged on to a cigar purchase that I made online. I was really impressed with the cigar and began keeping an eye out for the brand. Recently, I got lucky at an online auction and bought two boxes of Creme de Jamaica Toros for around $115.00, which was a far cry from the $88.00 a box price that I had seen floating around most cigar stores. I've found that this cigar is really a good choice for the smoker who loves mild cigars, because the flavors in this one are really abundant.
This cigar is the classic Toro size, having a length of 6 1/2 inches and a ring size of 49. The U. S. grown Connecticut shade wrapper envelopes Cubano seed Dominican filler, topped off with a nice Indonesian Besuki binder. The look of the Creme de Jamaica Toro is a bit understated--the label is small and not fancy or colorful at all, but looks aren't everything, as we all know. Appearance aside, the body of the cigar felt moist and springy, and it was easy to see that it was a stick made with attention to detail and solid workmanship.
The Creme de Jamaica Toro lit easily and the draw was almost perfect. The burn was even, and the smoke that came from the cigar was creamy and very sweet smelling. A nice grayish white ash developed as I smoked the cigar, and I was able to get about an hour and a half of pleasurable smoking out of this one before it became a nub. I had to relight only one time during the smoke, and the cigar stayed cool up to the very end, with no harshness or bite.
The flavors of the Creme de Jamaica Toro were really pleasing. I detected a lot of sweet vanilla in this smoke, offset very nicely with a hint of island spice. Overall, the flavor of the Creme de Jamaica can best be described as earthy, touched up by the specific flavors that I just mentioned. Those flavors were nicely balanced, with no lingering aftertaste, and the balance of the flavors really complimented the mildness of the cigar.
I recommend the Creme de Jamaica Toro for the cigar smoker who craves the milder sticks. I really like it, and in fact, I'm probably going to make it my everyday cigar, assuming I can find it at bargain prices somewhere.
