The Bottom Line Death stinks, y'all!

Bloody hell, this has been a shocker of a week. Two Australian legends passed away within a few days of each other. Peter Brock died just before midday today (8/9/06), when his race car smashed into a tree. He was killed instantly. And on Monday of this week, The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin was killed during filming for his new show. The killer was a sting ray. The very creature he was trying to save by exposing it to his viewers…

So, I’ve come to the conclusion that if you’re what one would consider to be an Australian icon, you should stay at home for the weekend and pray a cyclone doesn’t hit. While it’s well known to most folk that I don’t follow racing, the loss of Peter Brock still hit me as a big shock. My dad on the other hand, is a huge V8 fan, and on top of being a fan, he has met Peter several times and they got along famously.

When my dad told me about Peter’s passing (I had already heard about it by that point), I was expecting him to come across as uncharacteristically rattled. I was sort of right, but he did the typical thing all the men in my family (including me) do, pretending to appear completely unaffected in the eye of a crisis. . .

Excerpt from my blog 4/9/06…
Man. I'm getting so tired of this. Death. Never has something so predictable been so shocking. We all know we are going to die someday. Most folk deal with this by not dealing with it. It may sound like a coward’s way out, but it works. For a time at least...

Like I said, death is predictable. Everyone does it. It's the worlds leading fad, beating other popular past times such as breathing, eating, lying, you know, that kind of thing. But the worlds most predictable past time never fails to shock. Let me tell you a little story...

In my last week of high school, one of my favorite wrestlers died on Sunday, I found out on Monday morning in my last Computers class. It had been a long time since something had screwed with my mind that bad, but at least it helped me blend in at school. I guess everyone thought I was miserable because school was almost over & I wouldn't get to see anyone again. I couldn't give a stuff about that, not like I was a person of many friends, anyway.

But the death of Eddie Guerrero hurt like a pain I hadn't experienced in 5 years. And of course, I played my usual game of 'Everything’s going to be all right.' Well, on Thursday of that week, I broke down and cried to myself like a little baby, relieved only slightly by the fact that school was about to end. And school ending WAS the reason everyone else had their tears!

And now, friends, another person I highly respected, The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, 44, was killed by a sting ray. The very sting ray he was trying to save by filming. Ironic. But the saddest part is, a pack of morons are going to race out and start slaughtering the sting ray in the name of Steve Irwin. There isn't a thing in the world that he would disapprove of more! Although the passing of Steve Irwin didn't hit me as hard as Eddie Guererro's, it still is a massive shock and I'm saddened to have lost one of the greatest, most passionate, Australians that has ever lived. Being an avid animal lover, Steve's tireless work was deeply appreciated by me and so many others.

If you’re an Australian Epinions user, I guess it would be safe to say you’re within a minority. There aren’t a lot of us Aussie’s around these parts. But I feel that I, as a proud Australian, should mention these terrible recent events on the pages of Epinions. If someone has beat me to it, sorry & thank you for taking the time to write about such an unfortunate topic.

Here’s to two great Australians. Peter Brock, the only driver to have conquered Bathurst 9 separate times in his active career, thus earning him the names ‘King Of The Mountain’ and ‘Peter Perfect’…

…And Steve Irwin, arguably the most passionately enthusiastic Australian, who dedicated his entire life to the preservation of wildlife, a truly noble cause.

Cheers guys, you will be missed. And Steve, this one’s for you…CRIKEY!

Steve Irwin 1962-2006
Peter Brock 1945-2006
