The Bottom Line Read and maybe learn some important cleaning tips, etc.
Keep shoes dry... First off before you start to wear the shoes be sure to use adequate amount of powder such as Gold Bond Powder or Cornstarch Powder to prevent premature stench which may also mean the shoe is starting fall apart from the inside out much sooner as well. Knowing when to use a Water-Proofer My least shared secret for keeping them newer longer by using a water-proofer for synthetic or leather. Some water-proofers are not compatible; however, most that are made for shoes are compatible now days, but your generic water-proofers are for one or the other and may cause damage such as shrinking / discoloring / seams ripping / etc. Knowing when to use a Shoe Polish If you do not want or can not use water-proofer I would suggest using a traditional clear / neutral shoe polish if two or more colors and is made out of leather. Use black shoe polish for black cleats, etc. Getting shoes dry If you have a night where your shoes get wet or damp put in some extra powder in the shoes or if you have a dryer that has a rack to place clothing on without being tossed is a good idea. Plus there is boot dryers available online at various places that are relatively inexspensive. What to do with Shoe Upper On the shoe upper is most important to keep clean because dirt, grass, mud, and what ever you might get on the shoe upper it is best to clean it off with a damp rag (and a toothbrush or shoe cleaning brush if needed), to keep synthetic or leather newer rather than looking abused and smelling like a dirty physical education locker. © 09/10/2006 May not be copied or linked without author's written permission.
