Well, to say it's late would be to understate, which is an understatement in itself.
But I finally did it. Almost in time for this year's Banned Books Week!

Okay so I'm late, but I still entered... :-D
Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley was, I believe, banned at some point. I can find plenty of references saying it was banned, though not specifically why, where, or by whom - but I hope you'll accept my contribution all the same!!

What a valuable contribution, and what would a write-off be without something from Kurt Vonnegut? Again, I say, don't go, but if you must, return soon.

"Missing" (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray
Perhaps even more nefarious than banning books, is mutilating or stealing ones someone abhors. Both the Chicago and San Francisco Public Libraries have had gay books systematically mutilated in the last two years.
KMT student spies stole copies of Formosa Betrayed from many college libraries.
I was having difficulty finding a library copy of the book I wanted to write about (my excuse for being late), Slaughterhouse-Five, but finally succeeded and have reviewed it and the charages against it at http://www.epinions.com/content_264281689732.

You're very welcome for both of them. Thank you for hosting the write off. Knowledge is definitely a powerful tool in life.

Thanks for both of your thoughtful contributions. Not only does knowledge provide power, it also prevents some major problems that could alter lives. I often just sit and go, "why, why, why!"

This isn't a banned book, but I think it still qualifies for your write-off.

hard to choose just one, as there are several on the list I love and would enjoy reviewing. I went with the title that seemed to call out to me loudest when I looked over the list. :-)

Lois Lowry is an interesting writer. This is an appropriate book for the write off. Great job.

I'm proud to say I've read quite a few books on this list. I feel like such a nerdy outlaw.
I'll be reviewing Stephen King's Cujo...hopefully today.

I suspect your list of books is longer, you have an inside track. My librarian friends all work with adult books, mostly science and history. Can't wait.

the write-off type. I'm a little too insular for that kind of community-minded thing.
But I'm a librarian, so how can I not contribute to a celebration of Banned Books Week?
Besides, there's one on the list that I've been meaning to read. Now I have a good excuse. Mine won't be the first review for it, but that's never stopped me before.

Re: super idea for a write-off! (Reply to this comment)
by pestyside
I look forward to your contributions. I've learned (since suggesting this) that similar write-offs have been conducted but not for several years. There is also a list at Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banned_books that is lengthier than the one with ALA.

Re: ALA Top 100 list... (Reply to this comment)
by pestyside
This is short notice so I'm going to watch for submissions through mid October. October 15 hopefully provides sufficient time for locating, reading, and reviewing a book and it is relatively close to my first review (last year). The end of this write-off will in someway be my own personal celebration of one year with Epinions.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to do something in time for the WO but I'll try!! I'm not of the opinion that censorship is necessarily evil in itself, but there have undoubtedly been some daft bands in the past (and present).
