works but leaves perfumy smell

Pros:self cleaning mode with no scrubbing worked will on beige carpet
Cons:left an overpowering smell that still lingers after 5 days
I tried the self cleaning method (no scrubbing) and it did make the carpet noticeably cleaner, but it left a smell that I find overpowering and after 5 days it is still lingering. I'm guessing I will have to run a damp rag over it to pull out the residue - any suggestions?
