Back in my youth I used to be able to put away a dozen Oreos without an ounce of guilt. Nowadays I can't even imagine doing so, as I'm careful about watching my fat and calorie intake. However, life without guilty pleasures is boring, so I am always on the lookout for cookies that are a tad less sweet, but are still able to satisfy my need for something tasty and indulgent. Jules Destrooper Almond Thins fit the bill perfectly. I'd never heard of this brand before, but on a recent stroll down the cookie aisle in Safeway they caught my eye near the shortbread section. They had a number of different cookies including Ginger Thins and Butter Waffles, but I decided on the Almond Thins as they appeared to be sort of like a version of Almond Shortbread, which I really love. According to the box, Jules Destrooper was a colonial trader in Belguim who made cookies as a hobby during the 19th century, utilizing the spices he imported from abroad. In 1886 he turned his hobby into a business when he founded the Biscuiterie bearing his name. This cookie maker is still a family-run business, now in its fourth generation. Each box of Almond Thins contains 32 wafer thin cookies, carefully packaged in 4 compartments as they quite delicate. The Almond Thin itself is a simple looking cookie, light toasty brown in color with thin flecks of almond visible throughout the cookie. A glance at the ingredients list reflects the simplicity: Wheat Flour, brown sugar, butter, almonds, salt, and baking soda. But despite the simple recipe the Almond Thin is quite delightful and delicious. It has a rich buttery taste that is complemented the almond slivers throughout the cookie. I love the thin crisp texture. It is much thinner than shortbread and doesn't feel so heavy and overindulgent like shortbread can. Indeed, if you look at the serving size information, it actually indicates that 8 thins equal one serving: 140 calories, 4.5 grams fat (2.5 Saturated, 0 trans fat), 22 grams carb. Considering I usually only have maybe 2 or 3 at a time, that's quite reasonable. Of course, if you're like me, you might be tempted to have some ice cream on the side to complement these little buttery gems! However, much of the time a few of these little thins are enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. Jules Destrooper Almond Thins are a great little cookie for adults who want still want to have cookies to munch on, but without all the guilt. 5 stars!
