Man, It's good to hear you are on your way back.

Maybe we can get together in NYC sometime over a few beers. Perhaps nearby Grant's Tomb where the prize is waiting for ya. Wait, beer and no rest rooms yet. Not a good combo.

Whether the directives are right or wrong, thanks for doing your bit for our country. It's an honor to have guys like you looking out for us.

Best to ya,

Phil

Happy Thanksgiving...any advice? (Reply to this comment)
by cuculuain
Paul,

Happy Thanksgiving. Well, I'm headed downrange in February. We've got an office in Iraq and I'm going there to be the O-6's deputy. Still don't know about War College, although if I get it I expect to be deferred until I return.

Take care and it was good to see you.

thank you for your service, and I thank God you returned safely. Hope you had a good anti-war conservative to vote for in the recent election. I look forward to eventually meeting you in person.

Glad to see you've made it back. I saw no to A-stan. The Census Bureau is worth checking out for a job; they're gearing up for the 2010 Census and they'll probably hire you in at your military pay grade (my father enjoyed his time there after retirement, and my brother makes a very healthy income with them in Indiana).

Anyway, I look forward to an essay on the joys of steak and cold beer...

Thanks Alex,

I'm still waiting to hear about A-stan. Since I don't have a civilian job to return to, I may just do it. It'll keep me employed until I can find something else.

Thanks for your comments and the support.

Welcome Home, Indeed, (Reply to this comment)

Paul: May you enjoy your steak, perhaps with a pitcher of my favorite domestic beer, Sierra Nevada Pale; or a liter of the remarkably reasonable Three Thieves Cabernet!

Jump on a plane and I'll take you out myself, here in San Francisco.

I hope that you don't go for a tour in Afghanistan. You have done your bit, Paul, and what passes for leadership in Washington is going to ride good men down. The political decisions of the last six years have guaranteed that there will be another attack. It will be announced in advance, and our leaders will have to be restrained from their only response, atom bombs.

There will be plenty of casualties, all around. Then, as always seems to happen, they'll cut your pension and medical rights. [Perhaps put a hundred year tax on the Internet to pay for prosthetics, like the Spanish American War Telephone Tax, which was just dropped a couple of months ago.] Best be out of it while you can have justifiable pride in having done what was asked of you, and not having gone too far over the line.

In the next two years, I'm afraid, whoever is in charge, things are going to get worse. Line officers will begin to say, Enough! and resign, to lead something like a mutiny. I hope I'm wrong, but it's almost on automatic pilot now.

Let it go for now, and have that steak and a big glass of Cabernet or Shiraz. On me. Head for Frisco.

Seriously.

Many prayers are answered by your safe return, bud! If you swing thru ATL we will drink one or two (or eight or ten) drinks of your choice. Of course, steak will be on the menu, too.

Paul,
By the time you read this, you'll probably be on a flight to Ramstein. Or even better to the US. Email me when you are back, so we can finally shoot at the Intrepid. Rest assured...the steaks and beer will be on me :)

BTW, you echo the thoughts and sentiments of the vast majority of Americans back home.

Welcome back amigo,
