Opinion Summary
Witness the Atari Age! The golden age of crap.
by StarSoldier1 | Dec 04 '01
Pros: Loads of cool and easy to play arcade classics to pick from.
Cons: Very out of date and many games are just too simple or too boring.

Only 2 stars for the mother of all home video game consoles? the Atari 2600 had a longer life than even the Nintendo NES!

Yes there were others before it, but it was the champ of its time. You can't fairly compare it to today's games.

Top Ten (Reply to this comment)

Anytime someone writes a top ten, there's always going to be people like me who say, what about. . .

Pitfall or Pitfall 2 Both games were groundbreaking and loads of fun. I know it's a bit dated today, but it's still more fun than Dig Dug.

Demon Attack by Imagic. Did you ever play this game? It's kind of like a spinoff of Galaga. It was one of the few Atari games you could actually defeat.

Night Driver or Enduro By Activision. Lots of fun, and pretty good graphics for the 2600.

Joust The Williams Classic

Space Invaders For my money, I prefer this version over the arcade.

Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I loved your review. It makes me want to go back and do some serious updates to mine.

Keep up the great work !

I never said that the Atari 2600 was the first ever video game system. I just said it started my love of video games like many other people out there. The Odyssey was far from a success unlike the 2600.

Just to get facts strait. The video game craze was started by Magnavox with the very first video game ever, the Odyssey from 1972. Then there was the Odyssey 100, Odyssey 200, Odyssey 300, Odyssey 400, and finally in 1978 the Odyssey 2.

I do have a review of Adventure on my website but the game can't compare to games like Zelda or others of today. Thanks for your comments!

This is an excellent review with some really great detail. However, I can't believe that you forgot to mention "Adventure" anywhere. This was perhaps the first D&D adventure type game I ever played. When I got it, I played and played it until I finished it. Of course that only took me a few hours, but that was longer than most other games for the 2600. It also had the first ever 'easter egg' I had ever seen in a video game, and I don't know if I saw another one for practically a decade.

You mentioned what sounds like some good games that I had never heard of like "Frostbite", which doesn't surprise me. I got an Atari 800 computer in 1982, and that killed my enjoyment of the 2600 for the most part. However, I can't believe that there were still some games being produced for it in 2001. I'm still impressed at this unit's longevity.
