I have been to Moe's maybe a dozen times after deciding to never step foot in a Taco Bell ever again. They all have the same menu, similar prices, similar service, and nearly identical layouts and atmospheres. A cheaper version of Chipotle, Moe's is well-known for its free chips and salsa bar (with the purchase of a meal), as well as its easy ordering process without the fast-food feel. While none of the Moe's that I have been to have drive-thrus, I feel this wouldn't be appropriate since the restaurant relies on the concept of seeing and creating your own meal. All the Moe's that I have been to have had pleasant atmospheres with ample lighting and seating areas. The restaurants are generally clean, though at times I do feel they can do a better job with cleaning down tables. Since the restaurant requires customers to bus their own tables, I can see how this could be an issue during busy times, etc. Seats are comfortable enough to sit and enjoy a 20-minute meal, but you wouldn't want to lounge around all day as if you were at Panera Bread or Starbucks. The line to order food can get long very quickly - especially around mealtimes. The line is almost always slow-moving as well, considering that every customer customizes his or her own meal with certain ingredients. Since there are so many choices when it comes to customization, this can take awhile. The assembly line of workers generally does its best to be quick and pleasant, but it is still not as quick as most fast food places. The menu at Moe's includes quirky-named entrees, such as the Joey Bag of Donuts (choice of grilled meat, rice, shredded cheese, and pico de gallo) and The Funk Meister (choice of grilled meat, beans, shredded cheese, pico de gallo, and lettuce). Besides the usual selection of burritos, tacos, quesadillas, salads, fajitas, and nachos, there are also vegetarian choices and the ability to add sides such as queso, guacamole, and beans in a cup or a bowl. Side items range from $.65 to $5 depending on what you get, and meals are between $4 and $9. There is a deal with includes a side of guacamole or queso with the complementary chips, as well as a regular drink, to any entrée. Basically, you can get away with a decent sized meal for less than ten bucks and still feel full at the end. Not bad. The last time I went to Moe's, I ordered the Super Kingpin - shredded cheese with a side of pico de gallo and sour cream - for $4.49. I also asked for grilled sirloin steak to be added (which is advertised for an additional 49 cents). After customizing my meal and selecting the kinds of beans and vegetables I wanted, I went to the cash register and was rung up...for nearly $7. I figured it was just a mistake and told the cashier - who appeared to be the manager - that my meal should be just over $5 with tax. She repeated my order, and firmly said that the price was right since I added steak. Not wanting to be overcharged, I clearly pointed out to her the sign on the menu which stated that the addition of steak cost only $.49, not two bucks. While she gave me the lower price, she still insisted that she was right and that she was doing me a favor. Since when does "add $.49 for grilled sirloin steak or pulled pork" to a quesadilla mean "add $2"? It's not the cost that bothers me - it's the principle. Nonetheless, I did enjoy my quesadilla, which was filled to the brim with dark beans, lettuce, cheese, and delicious guacamole. The food wasn't necessarily the highest quality, but it still did the trick. The tortilla chips came in a large basket and were well complemented by an assortment of salsas - which can be mild or spicy. I do wish that guacamole and queso was included in the salsa bar, but I won't complain. I have found the food quality and portions to be consistent at Moe's. You really do get what you pay for - the food, while not the healthiest, is still tasty and hits the spot when you need a quick fix of Mexican flair. The menu is not that extensive, but the fact that you can customize your meal is a perk. There are various vegetarian options as well, and there is also a children's menu. Overall, I have to recommend Moe's - they do provide a good value. Just make sure you check your receipt before you leave the register - you may be overcharged without knowing it!
