"HAPPY HALLOWEEN 3"...........2006Oct 09 '06 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line These were 10 entertaining, and funny movies too me. If you haven't seen all of them give them a try. Well, here's the completion of my Halloween trilogy. As I stated in my last years list, this would be a list of movies that contain horror, murder and most importantly... laughs. So here's my list of 10 favorite, Comedy-Horror films from "HAPPY HALLOWEEN 3-THE LIGHTER SIDE OF HALLOWEEN" Movies are listed in order from newest to oldest. 10) (EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS) (2002) (PG-13) An homage to 50's B-movies with terrific special effects thrown in. Starring David Arquette,Kari Wyhrer, and Scarlett Johansson. This movie starts off with a truck that accidentally drops a barrel of chemicals into a pond. The chemicals inside causes the local spiders to grow to the size of cars, and wreak havoc on a small isolated town. The town folks mostly consist of off the wall characters with the exception of (Arquette) go figure, and (Wyhrer) who plays the town sheriff. The FX for the giant spiders are great, and the not so little critters are amusing, as in some scenes you can hear them saying "ouch! ouch!" as there being ran over or dragged by a vehicle. The movie is played for more of a comedy, than a horror film. The realism though of the spiders may make some arachnophobes sqeamish. 9) (MARS ATTACKS!) (1996) (PG-13) Based loosely on the 1960's martian bubble gum cards, this Tim Burton romp stars an allstar cast including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close,Pierce Brosnan. Story is about the earth of course, being invaded by large headed, bubble eyed martians who just happen to have a twisted sense of humor. The martians are hilarious in this movie, and every actor in the film over plays there parts perfectly. You know they had fun making this movie. It is so off the wall you can't help but laugh. Tim Burtons imagination runs amok in this zany entertaining film. The scene with the martians running around telling people "Don't run, we are your friends!!!" while blasting them with there laser guns, is hilarious. 8) (ARMY OF DARKNESS) (1993) (R) This is the third of the "EVIL DEAD" movies starring Bruce Campbell and directed by Sam Raimi. Our hero Ash (Campbell) is transported/time warped what ever you want to call it, back to the middle ages, armed with a chain saw and his "boom stick!"... Um thats his sawed off shotgun for you non-primitive screw-heads. In this episode, Ash must destroy the "Book of the Dead" while reciting the words "Klaatu Barada Nikto!" And yes that phrase is from the 50's sci-fi classic "The Day The Earth Stood Still" Naturally our hero Ash can't remember the words verbatim, and all hell breaks loose there after. The movie is filled with laugh out loud action scenes of humans fighting the dead, and memorable one liners. 7) (BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) (1992) (PG-13) Starring Kristy Swanson,Donald Sutherland,Rutger Hauer,Luke Perry. Cheerleader/valley girl Buffy (Swanson) is the chosen one of her generation to fight and kill vampires. (Sutherland) is her mentor, and trains her on how to combat vampires. At first Buffy wants no part of it, and even asks her mentor "like, what is your damage?" With some convincing from (Sutherland) and reoccurring nightmares from the past Buffy realises she is indeed the one to rid the world of vampires. The movie contains a lot of amusing dialogue especially from Swanson,Perry and Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman. 6) (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD) (1985) (R) Brains!!..Brains!!..Brains!! are what the zombies are craving for in this parody of George Romeros Night-Dawn-Day of the dead movies. Starring James Karen,Klu Gulager and directed by Dan O'Bannon. This movie has a good mix of humor and genuine scares. Story is about 2 employees of a medical supply warehouse (supplies unfortunately include dead bodies) which are reanimated, when they accidentally unleash a toxin that brings the dead back to life. The toxin eventually escapes out of a chimney during a rain storm, and ends up in the soil of a grave yard causing the dead to rise, and feast on the living. Not only amusing, but also tense as a handful of survivors are trapped in the medical warehouse and a nearby mortuary. 5) (MURDER BY DEATH) (1976) (PG) Okay, so it's not really a horror film, but a whodunit murder mystery. But hey, a murder is involved, and it takes place in a creepy mansion. And yes it's funny. Written by Neil Simon, and containing an all-star cast including Peter Faulk, Peter Sellers, and David Niven. (Truman Capote) is the host of our creepy mansion who invites some of the greatest fictional detectives to solve a murder that has taken place in his home. (Faulk) as Sam Spade and (Sellers) as Charlie Chan steal the movie. It would have been even more classic If they had Sellers play his famous Inspector Clouseau. Witty dialogue and atmosphere make this movie a winner. 4) (THE GHOST AND MR CHICKEN) (1966) (G) This is my personal favorite (Don Knotts) movie. (Miss him) Ate this up as a kid and still get a kick out of it today as an adult. Luther (Knotts) gets a crack at being a reporter for the local newspaper, the catch is he has to stay in a supposedly haunted house over night where a real murder took place. Yes, this is a silly whodunit, but it is a movie the whole family can watch and laugh at together. The movie contains the usual cast of zany characters including Dick Sargent (Of "Bewitched" fame) he was the second Dick in Samantha Stevens (Elizabeth Montgomery) life......the first one being Dick York of course. Ok that was bad. Next! 3) (THE RAVEN) (1963) (G) This is my personal favorite Roger Corman film. Starring 3 Hollywood legends, well 4 I guess. Vincent Price,Boris Karloff,Peter Lorre, and a very young Jack Nicholson. Why they haven't remade this one, is beyond me considering the success of the "Harry Potter" movies. This was the first movie, I had ever seen that involved sorcery. Written by the great (Richard Matheson). The movie is loosely based on the classic short story by Edgar Allan Poe. (Price) and (Karloff) are both powerful magicians who both can wield there magic through just the use of hand gestures. Movie starts off with (Lorre) also a magician, but a poor one at that, requesting help from (Price). To help him change back to human form. (He's been changed into a raven by Karloff) and requests Prices help to battle (Karloff). (Prices) character has no interest in helping until he's told his supposed dead wife is alive and well, and living with (Karloff). This movie is a gem of a Halloween film, dripping with atmosphere, horror and comedy. All three leads are a hoot in this classic. 2) (SCARED STIFF) (1953) (GHOST BREAKERS) (1940) (G) I listed both of these films together, because they are both based on the same story. (SCARED STIFF) Stars Dean Martin, and Jerry Lewis. (GHOST BREAKERS) stars Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard. Both movies have main characters (Martin,Lewis,Hope) investigating a haunted mansion in Cuba. (M&L) provide the slapstick version (HOPE) provides the quick one-liners version. Both provide the comical chills. If you watch these movies back to back (GHOST BREAKERS) first, than (SCARED STIFF) You'll than fully understand a truly classic ending in (SCARED STIFF). If you have seen both films you already know what I mean. 1) (ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN) (1948) (G) This is the very best (A&C) movie. They have other movies where they meet other monsters (Jekyll and Hyde) (The Mummy) But this one,is truly a wonderful classic. This is (A&C) at there very best. Also starring (Bela Lugosi) as Dracula (of course) and (Lon Chaney JR) as the Wolfman. And for the few who have not seen this, stick around for the ending, and you'll hear the voice of another famous horror star. This movie blends great atmosphere with comical dialogue from (A&C). What also makes the movie work so well is that Lugosi,Chaney and Glenn Strange who plays Frankenstein, play there roles straight. Well that's it for this year. I know what your thinking "Hey wheres Ghost Busters? Young Frankenstein? Shaun Of The Dead? Gremlins? Corpse Bride? From Dusk Till Dawn? Lost Boys? An American Werewolf In London? and of course "The Fearless Vampire Killers, Or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are In My Neck" and yes that is the whole title of that one movie. All I can say is,that's the beauty of epinions. Everyone gets to list "There Favorites" These are mine. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! |
