My Top 10 Contemporary (and slightly unconventional) Romances

The Bottom Line I've grown up watching a lot of romantic movies because of my mom and sister and these are some that have made the most impact in my life.

The Girl Next Door

“Now I think moral fiber's about finding that one thing you really care about. That one special thing that means more to you than anything else in the world. And when you find her, you fight for her. You risk it all, you put her in front of everything, your life, all of it. And maybe the stuff you do to help her isn't so clean. You know what? It doesn't matter. Because in your heart you know, that the juice is worth the squeeze.”

I love this movie because to me, it portrays a modern day love story. No fanciful clichéd acts of love that have been done before. It explores a fairy-tale-like yet unconventional romance that, while outrageous, one can actually see happening in today’s world. The obstacles that come between the lovers are similarly modern-day problems that perhaps many people (like me) can actually see happening.

Serendipity

“Yet even in certain defeat, the courageous Trager secretly clung to the belief that life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences. Uh-uh. But rather, it’s a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite, sublime plan.”

A great movie for the hopeless romantics out there who love to believe in love, chances, fate, and destiny. Through their lives, you see how even the slightest of things can change the course of the present and future for better or for worse and how in the end, it is the smallest things that have the biggest impacts on one's life.

Love Actually

[on sheets of poster board] "With any luck, by next year - I'll be going out with one of these girls. [shows pictures of beautiful supermodels] But for now, let me say - Without hope or agenda - Just because it's Christmas - And at Christmas you tell the truth - To me, you are perfect And my wasted heart will love you - Until you look like this [picture of a mummy] ”

“[in Portuguese] Beautiful Aurelia, I've come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person - because I hardly knows you - but sometimes things are so transparency, they don't need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England.”

Despite being under the romantic comedy genre, I rate this movie above the rest because of the way it explores all sorts of different angles of love. From the beginnings of love, love over time, and unrequited love, the entire spectrum of human relationships are covered, both in a very funny and powerful way.

Before Sunrise & Before Sunset

(Too many great quotes to list the absolute best. In fact pretty much every line of dialogue in both movies is brilliant)
“I guess when you're young, you just believe there'll be many people with whom you'll connect with. Later in life, you realize it only happens a few times.”

[hugs him] “I want to see if you stay together or if you dissolve into molecules.”

Two movies yes, but you really cannot watch one (the first one) without watching the other. Indisputably my all-time favorite romance. While this movie might not be for everyone, as some people would say that nothing really happens in this movie, I disagree. What this movie does not have is a definite plot but it more than makes up for it by the conversations between the main characters. Watching the movie makes you feel like you are actually there, in the middle of their discussions about life, love and everything in between. An incredibly intelligent movie everyone should watch.

City of Angels

“I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One.”

A definite tear-jerker, no doubt, but one of the most deep and heartfelt romances that I’ve ever seen. Really goes to show how love transcends all, that someone would rather choose to experience even love even in the briefest of moments and give up something like angel-hood.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

Clementine: I wish you had stayed.
Joel: I wish I had stayed to. I swear to god I wish I had stayed. I wish I had done a lot of things. I wish... I wish I had stayed.
[Walking out]
Clementine: Joel? What if you stayed this time?
Joel: I walked out the door. There's no memory left.
Clementine: Come back and make up a good-bye at least. Pretend we had one.

A great movie about losing love and regaining it in the most quirkiest of ways. This movie sends across a great message as well – about how even when things go bad, one can go back and look at the best times and find love again.

Notting Hill

“After all... I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

A classic romantic comedy and what I consider to be a romantic comedy for guys. Man falls in love with a dream girl. Also for the hopeless romantics out there who like to believe that even the most unattainable targets can one day cross into your path.

Little Manhattan

[talking about love]
It was the pain that had no name.

Rosemary: But I thought you hate me.
Gabe: I don't. I lied. I wasn't gonna be like my father. I wasn't gonna let all these things left unsaid smother me. Rosemary, I love you.
Rosemary: You what?
Gabe: I do. I'm sorry, but I love you more than anyone's ever loved. I love you, I love you, I love you.
[thinking]
Gabe: How's that for letting it all hang out there? And hang, and hang, and hang.
[out loud]
Gabe: You think you might wanna love me, too?

I would call this movie the surprise romance of 2005. Here, you witness the beginnings of love in the most innocent yet heart-pounding way – through eyes of a 10-year old boy about to experience his first love. Something everyone can identify with. As funny as it sounds, throughout parts of this movie was biting my nails out of pure anticipation and excitement.

Garden State

“You changed my life. You changed my life, and I've known you four days. This is the start of something really big, but right now, I gotta go.”
“Yea the ellipsis, it’s dumb. It’s dumb its an awful idea. And I’m not gonna do it, OK? Cause like you said this is it. This is life. And I’m in love with you Samantha. I think that’s the only thing I’ve ever been really sure of in my entire life. That I’m really messed up right now and that I got a whole lot of stuff I gotta work out. But I don’t wanna waste anymore of my life without you in it.”

Another great “coming of age” romance set in a modern day setting. Story of how love finds and catches you in the most unlikely of places and sources. And of course, the great soundtrack that everyone is raving about.

Leon – The Professional
Mathilda: Leon, I think I'm kina falling in love with you.
[Leon chokes on his milk]
Mathilda: It's the first time for me, you know?
Léon: [wiping himself off] How do you know it's love if you've never been in love before?
Mathilda: 'Cause I feel it.
Léon: Where?
Mathilda: [stoking her stomach] In my stomach. It's all warm. I always had a knot there and now... it's gone.
Léon: Mathilda, I'm glad you don't have a stomach ache any more. I don't think it means anything.

“You're not going to lose me. You've given me a taste for life. I wanna be happy. Sleep in a bed, have roots. And you'll never be alone again, Mathilda. Please, go now, baby, go. Calm down, go now, go.”

Perhaps one of the more unconventional (and controversial) love stories around. The story of how two very different and unlikely individuals give each other the missing component in each person’s respective lives. A little girl shows an emotionally cold assassin how to live life and in return, gets the love she never had.
