About Me: Hi. I haven't posted to Epinions since I realized something.

Forget the Cube & X-Box -- PS2 is available!

Written: Dec 06 '01
Pros:Multifunctional; state-of-the-art design and user interface; great games.
Cons:Hidden costs in first purchase -- memory cards & second controller not included.
The Bottom Line: You get what you pay for.

Although Sony's Playstation 2 is considerably more expensive than the X-Box or GameCube, the features, design and compatable & available game libraries should insure that the teen-adult game buying market selects the PS2 as the game console of choice. The Playstation 2 also serves as a DVD player, adding end-user value to the system.

As a first-time buyer I was dissapointed to find that the Playstation 2 did not come packaged with a memory card -- a required device if one plans to undertake the many epic adventures available in PS2 format -- or the old PS1 format, for that matter (the Playstation 2 supports the Playstation 1 format and game library). One cannot save a game in progress without a memory card, and it is likely that a first time PS@ buyer will want to turn the power off eventually. Tip: opt for Sony-authorized 2nd party manufacturers for memory cards -- they work just as well and cost less.

First time buyers planning to use 2-player games will also want to shell out extra dollars for a second game controller. Finding a Playstation 2 on sale is possible this year (keep an eye on Sears) so you might be able to absorb the cost of one of these within the $300.00 price point.

If you're buying a game for pre-teens, another game system might be your best bet. If, however, you're intending to play with this thing yourself, the Playstation 2 is definately the most elegant and sophisticated box out there, and I believe the growing library of excellent games in this format will guarantee that the PS2 format will remain the top-box of choice until the inevitable arrival of the future Playstation 3.
