And Speaking of Dads, Here's the Other Side of the Coin...

The Bottom Line If only Lex and Lionel could have a few more moments like this...

One of the most forceful recurring themes in Smallville is the extent to which how one is raised dictates who he becomes. Clark attributes the development of his moral character to his adoptive parents, while Lex blames his father for most of his mis-steps. While Lionel Luthor is hardly an exemplary father figure, I often think Lex's animosity is somewhat misplaced. But every time one of them genuinely reaches out to the other, something comes along to ruin it. This poem recalls a rare and all too transitory moment of perfect reconciliation in season four's Onyx.

This Moment

You've both been purged of evil.
Only the good remains,
And cautious ecstasy fills
Your spirits and your brains.

Do not indulge your hate,
Even though the urge is strong.
Strive to escape the fate
That has chased you for so long.

Embrace this sacred day.
Ponder carefully and then
Say the things you need to say.
Your chance may not come again.

You won't forget this meeting,
Though you may store it deep
Within, this dream so fleeting,
This treasure that you keep.

One day you will remember
This moment that you had
And find within the embers
What you want most: a dad.
