Okay, so I'm a little obsessive when it comes to my weight. I've never been overweight, by much anyway, and I try to stay fit and healthy. Even with my weight obsession, for some reason I always bought cheap, analog, arrow/dial type scales, just for simplicity. Since I started boxing and training like an athlete, my body has changed and become more muscular. I decided it's about time I upgraded my scale so I could watch my progress and track body fat and water content in addition to basic weight. I saw this scale in the Title Boxing catalog and decided to check it out.
~ Product Description The DigiWeigh Body Fat Water Scale model DW-61 measures body weight, body fat, and body water, all at one time. It can store up to 8 persons' data, so it's good for whole family use.
We are told in the instruction manual that this electronic scale uses biological resistance analytic approach technology. When you stand on the electrode pan barefoot, a tiny electric signal goes through your body, and the scale measures the value of the resistance and then calculates in combination with your input personal information to get the final figures.
Currently Epinions does not have a picture with this listing, but this scale is rather unique in its look and design. It is round, with a clear, tempered glass platform, surrounded with a brushed stainless steel looking (not sure if it actually is) frame. This scale measures 14" in diameter. It is powered by 2 lithium batteries, which are included and installed.
It features a nice, large, LCD display, measuring 3" x 1 ½". There is even an anti-moisture system which makes it ideal for bathroom use. I paid $39.99, which is quite reasonable.
~ Setup and Use Instructions
First you need to set up your personal data. The instruction manual is easy to follow, and the setup procedure is fairly intuitive and easy. You need to input your gender, age, and height. The scale will hold up to 8 different users' information.
The buttons to setup your information and to control the scale functions are located around the bottom half of the round scale.
To weigh and measure, press the On button to start up the scale. Select your personal data, if more than one person is using the scale. Step on the scale barefoot, and your weight is shown. Then the scale automatically measures fat rate and moisture rate. The scale shuts off automatically after each use.
The instruction manual gives body fat and water rates for males and females, categorized as thin, underweight, normal, overweight, and obese, just to give you some proper reference and the measurements you are getting.
Note: You MUST step on the scale barefoot. If you're wearing socks it won't work. Don't step on the scale if your feet are too wet either.
~ My Experience
I was really excited to try out the DigiWeigh Body Fat Water Scale. I had never had a chance to take those measurements before.
First, the scale looks great in my bathroom, very sleek. The glass platform is pretty cool looking, and clear, so I can see the tile floor through the glass. It is very low-profile and sturdy.
At first I thought I needed to bend down to touch the buttons to start the scale, but then it dawned on me that I could touch the buttons with my toe - duh! So, no need to bend over to start the scale, just a touch of the toe does it.
There are metal contacts where you stand to get your measurements. Although electronic technology is used, trust me, you don't feel anything. It's just like standing on any other scale. First your weight is shown, which is easy to read on the LCD screen. The figures are dark LCD though, not lighted, so using in a dark room wouldn't work.
The scale quickly gives you your weight, and then in a moment the weight figure goes away and you are given your body fat and body water rates. You get one, then the other, and they alternate for a minute or so, flashing back and forth. After a minute or so more, the scale turns off.
If you are really trying to keep track, you almost need to write everything down. There is no summary of your stats at the end, which would be nice. I've been writing down my weight, and body fat and water rates after each weighing, just to track any changes.
Once the scale was giving me an error message and wouldn't weigh, but I moved it slightly and then it was okay. I haven't had any other error messages so far.
~ Final Thoughts
The DigiWeigh Body Fat Water Scale is a nice upgrade, and I love being able to track my body fat and water rates along with my actual weight. The scale is sleek and looks great in my bathroom. The readout is clear and easy to see. The only thing I wish, is that the scale would give you a summary of all three measurements at the end.
