Double dare! (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
It would have helped to have the URL, but I found it. "most focused"??? Surely "Blue Velvet" and the tedious "Straight Story" are more focused!
I'd rather watch "Persona" again or "Memento" again than M Dr.
There is definitely a Disney Movie cult, although he cult of particular Disney movies involves younger members than the David Lynch cult. The word derives from the Latin cultus that meant "adoration" without a connotation of the number of fellow adorers; admittedly, the word in English has taken on connotations of a small circle (which would rule out "The English Patient," and the number of critical admirers of "Memento" and "Magnolia" was quite large).

Some good insight (Reply to this comment)
by George_Chabot, in Movies
Shawshank, Memento, and Magnolia are quite overrated. I like the Game and Bladerunner, but would be willing to think about your points. The other movies I haven't seen, to my knowledge. Magnolia was so poor I didn't even bother to write it up. Memento was almost as bad. Thanks for a thought provoking excursion, Chris!

Cult movies are not just movies that some see over and over again... like the ones you mentioned: Rocky Horror, or Grease or Pink Flamingos or Eraserhead.
Under that definition many Disney features and movies like Beverly Hills Cop are cult films.
Cult movies are non-mainstream movies. They were not meant to connect to a huge mass audience. They have elements of subversion, anarchy perhaps perversion in them.
You can define a cult movie in a lot of ways of course but one the weakest definitions is a movie you watch over and over again.
Oh and I double dare you to read my article on Mulholland Drive Stephen.

"Cult movies" (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
are ones fans see over and over and over again (Eraserhead, Rocky Horror, Grease [when was that?], Titanic). Is there room for "critically" in your titles? If so, 1981-2006 is redundant!)
I definitely understand the need to put such pieces somewhere:)
If I make my own list, "Mullholland Drive" is going on it. I don't think that "Poison" received enough praise to qualify, though it is the worst movie mentioned in this duscussion (and I've condemned Dramastef to watching it, for which I feel bad).
Though not bad, "Far from Heaven" (and particularly Dennis Quaid's very ordinary performance in it) might be a contender for overpraise. Also "Boogie Nights," even though I liked it (in contrast "Magnolia" got some brickbats, though it was overpraised, IMHO).

You are allowed without anyone's permission to love any movie you want. And Shawshank is a reasonable movie to LOVE.
There's a difference in saying: Oh I love this movie Shawshank Redemption, I really do and I don't care what anyone else says about it
and
saying:
Shawshank is one of the greatest movies ever made. It's brilliant and a masterpiece from start to finish. One of the greatest movies ever made.
I have heard and read far too many comments of the second example.

with your reasoning on all but... "The Shawshank Redemption". Call it what you will, still one of my favorite films.
Excellent writing!

comment on your kind comments.. (Reply to this comment)

Over-rated does not mean 'not worth seeing'.
Since you revealed you are a fan of author Dick, on a matter of principal alone you have to be miffed that the director of a movie would not even bother to read the short story the screenplay is based on-- yes? Anyway, the voice over and happy ending were horrible. When it was improved about a decade later, you still had the action movie elements taking over the film completely which is unfortunate.
Over-rated does not mean 'not worth seeing'.
Stephen you are right that English Patient was not a cult movie, but some of the movies on the list entered the market place as fully backed and marketed movies.
(I had to choose a category to put this piece in and Cult Films seemed to kind of fit.. you now how that goes around here).
I thought the book was good, not great and I liked The Talented Mr. Ripley much better from the same director.
Titanic was not and is not thought of as a great movie by many people. Popular, entertaining sure... a good or great movie? Nope.
Chariots of Fire, Gladiator, Happiness, Poison and several others just missed being on the list by the way.
I'll direct you Stephen to a piece I wrote on Mulholland Drive that might possibly make you interested in watching the film again:

I am very glad the world is full of real cats by the way.

The Game, doesn't that film give away the plot in the title?
I will forgive you (one day) for naming my favorite sci fi film and one of my favorite films ever as "overrated", because I agree with many others on your list. I have to feed my cat now. I own a real cat. I had to pay quite a lot of money for it, it's real, not a robot.

9 out of 10 is very good (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
"The English Patient" was a mainstream movie based on a Booker Prize-winning novel. It is not a cult movie by any stretch of my imagination, and superior to a number of other Oscared and fawned-upon movies. "Titanic" was a movie that its fans saw multiple times. (I had to check to make sure your time range excluded "Ordinary People," but what about "Gladiator"?)
I'd find room for "Mulholland Drive," too.
