Research. These guys' customer service, product, and pricing is exceptional. I spent over 6 months trying out every mattress I could find from every store I could locate in my area (Sleepys, Better Bedding, Bob's, Sears, etc). After hearing 100 different theories on what mattress is best (even from the same store), I determined that the most logical advice given was a mattress should allow your spine to remain roughly in alignment and supported horizontally, as you are when you are standing up vertically. This ruled out most spring mattresses, since they simply would not allow my spine's natural curve to remain in shape once I lied down.
Latex. I also looked extensively at latex type mattresses, but found them far too firm and unaccommodating for my needs.
Service. After deciding upon a memory foam mattress, I spoke with their customer service over nearly a 1/2 dozen different calls asking every question I had on their warranty, pricing, and what competing product I could try out that were similar. I tried out some of the make/models of mattresses that they indicated were comparable. Unsurprisingly, these were also roughly 2-4x the cost of HF's model.
Decision. I ended up picking up a close-out, previous year line of mattresses that they had on significant discount. It came as advertised in a big cardboard box, shrink-wrapped up. Somewhat awkward to move around, but once you cut open the plastic it immediately starts expanding. For this reason I highly recommend getting it into the exact position you want it BEFORE cutting it open since these mattresses expand rapidly and are NOT light. I believe the store recommends waiting a day before sleeping on it, but I found that it expanded to roughly its full size within only a couple of hours.
Smell. Lots of folks ask about whether there is a lingering smell with memory foam mattresses, while I did smell a strange smell of the foam for the first couple nights, it went away fairly quickly and I have never smelt it since. I would really rate this as an overall nonissue.
Experience. I should also mention that it took my back a good 1-2 weeks to get used to sleeping on a memory foam mattress. It does not "push against" your back like the traditional inner spring mattress does. I have lower back pain and I do find that sleeping on a very firm mattress on my back does help at times. I would classify HF's mattress as not firm, but very supple. What this translates into is that I find myself sleeping on my side and stomach far more than my back since buying this mattress. I used to have a really difficult time sleeping on my stomach, because, having my arms underneath my head, it would simply arch my back far too much and I would wake up in pain the next morning. I still experience this on traditional inner-spring mattresses. On the contrary, HF's mattress simply contours to the shape of your body once you lie down on it, dropping your arms down into the mattress and adapting perfectly to the extra weight applied to it. It sounds funny, but it really feels as if you are floating when laying on this thing! For comparison's sake, I would not classify it as nearly as firm as some of the Tempurpedic models you find in the store. It also adjusts to your body almost instantly, as opposed to waiting for yourself to "sink in" as you do with the Tempurpedic lines. This is a great compromise between the instant "bounce" you get with inner spring and the delayed sinking you get with Tempurpedics.
Heat. A lot of folks ask about heat with memory foam mattresses. Admittedly, I do tend to find myself a bit dehydrated in the AM, but cannot blame this entirely on the mattress as there is significant lack of air circulating in my bedroom and it tends to be far warmer than the rest of the apartment. I would agree that you have to keep a room cooler than normal, because this mattress does store your heat more than a traditional mattress might. Still, I do not see this as a significant impact/issue. That makes it incredibly cozy in the winter and may also even lower your heating bills as well since you do not need to keep the temps up to stay warm at night.
One Year Later. It has been over a year from when I bought this mattress and after the initial 1-2 week break-in process, I do believe this has been the single greatest purchase I have ever made. It has not altered it's shape, compressed, or reduced the quality of sleep I get in any way. I have used this on an Ikea Malm bed frame with only curved slats for support underneath. Zero problems seen here. I sleep incredibly well, have hardly any back pain, and do not ever want to get out of my bed in the AM. I never really appreciated just how much quality of life can be attained through sleeping on a good quality mattress. Especially when you do not get anywhere near the 7-8 hours of recommended daily sleep that is recommended, you really have to make those hours you DO get count.
Overall. Since buying this mattress I continue to be curious and test out other mattress products but have, so far, not found anything quite like the HF mattress' unique combination of supple, "instant" adaption to your body, reasonable pricing, and unparalleled return policy. While most local mattress stores continue to swap up their brand names to confuse the customer, pitch ridiculous computer-color-matching systems (what am I, a can of paint?), and promote very high-priced, imported foam Rolls Royce mattresses, these guys just produce a great product, explained in excruciating depth, and backed by best-in-class return policy. If you figure that the typical bedding store is going to charge you a restocking fee, delay shipping for a week, and only give you 2 weeks to try their mattress out (barely enough time to know if it works, IMHO), you will see how these guys' 1 year policy and minimal shipping costs are such a bargain.
