Ease of Use:
Pros:Ease of use, good color reproduction, high resolution, its fast too.
Cons:Some software bugs, streaking from light reflected from within the scanner.
The Bottom Line: Super scanner at a low price to boot. Just be aware of a possible streaking problem.
This machine produces incredibly sharp scans at a fairly quick pace. It is quiet in operation and interfaces beautifully with my Epson photo printer. When I first got the scanner I was able to quickly produce astounding copies of 8x10 photographs onto Epson premium glossy photo quality paper. The prints rival anything that a standard photo lab can produce.
Now for the bad news. First, the Epson PhotoSmart program window likes to pop up, even when it is not requested to do so. Perhaps it is peculiar to my computer, but I find the a re-boot gets rid of this annoyance for a day or so before it starts up again. Another more serious problem with the software is when it decides it is finished work for the day, even if you are not. Twice I have had to re-do a substantial number of scans that were lost before I had a chance to click the" finish" button. I should mention that the program allows you to stack a large number of scans before you request them to be saved somewhere on your computer. I now make sure that I don't stack more than 16 scans before saving them.
Another problem concerns the machine itself, at least the unit that I currently have. My 1250 leaves a narrow band of vertical streaking down the right hand side of the image. This streak just happens to line up with the chromed guide bar that sits inside the machine, under the glass. It appears that light may be reflected off this bar and is then picked up by the scanner itself. I have read about this problem appearing in reviews of other Epson scanners. I will return this particular machine to the retailer for an exchange for another 1250, I just pray that this is an isolated problem. I have removed the streak from scans that I wanted to print by using photo editing software. Most of my photo scans are for archival purposes and can be repaired in most cases if required. However, the streaking problem demands a fair amount of additional work that should not have to be performed.
