Writing an MP3 Player Review

The Bottom Line By following a few basic guidelines, it's easy to write an MP3 player review that will help consumers shopping for their MP3 player

Thinking about reviewing your iPod, Zen or maybe a new MP3 player you just got? Wondering how you should tackle writing up that review? Perhaps you aren't sure what to include or what information can be helpful to consumers reading your review? It's not as hard as you may think, so put in those ear buds, turn up the music and read on so you too can write a review of your MP3 player.

How should I write the review?

I think one of the most important considerations for an MP3 review, or any review here on Epinions is to consider yourself the consumer and figure out what you would want to know before you purchased whatever you are reviewing. This is especially important I think for electronic reviews, where there can be so much information about a certain product, but there may only be a few features that separate it from other similar products. In that case – that's what you want to focus on, so a consumer can more easily compare the one product to the others.

Once you've figured that out, the rest of the review should fall into place as long as you cover a few basics:

- An overview of the product;
- Your personal experience with the product; and
- Your overall like or dislike of the product.

This will give anyone reading your review a good idea of what the product is, what features differentiate it from other products, how it's worked for someone and if you would recommend that others get this product or stay away from it.

Writing an MP3 Player Review

Obviously there are a lot of MP3 players out there so no two reviews are going to be the same, but there are several different features and topics that are common to all of the players and make up that all important comparison information for consumers reading your review.

Identifying your player
Most importantly, your review should identify the MP3 player's brand name and model number. It makes it clear what MP3 player your are reviewing and gives you a natural lead into the description of the basic features of your player.

Describing the Player
This doesn't mean you need to include a list of all the technical specifications of your MP3 player (I wouldn't, most people just glaze over on those kind of lists), but you should provide some basics that give a reader a good idea of what the player can do and any special features it may have. For an MP3 player, details I like to see in any review are:

What kind of storage does it have (hard drive based or flash memory)?
How much memory does it have (and how does that relate to how much you can store)?
What kind of media can it play (audio, photos, video, etc)
How big and how heavy is it?
How long do the batteries last and how do you charge it?
How are the ear buds that come with the player?
How is the sound/photo/video quality?
What accessories come with it?
How does it connect to your computer?
What software is included and how does it work?

Your experience with the MP3 player
While everything else in the review can be found by a dedicated consumer, this is the portion of your review where you have the opportunity to shine and to provide information that a consumer won't be able to find anywhere else. Specifically, you can tell the consumer how the MP3 player worked for you.

There are two ways to include this information, throughout your review as you are describing the various features of the MP3 player, or you can have a section in your review that is dedicated to your experiences with the player. Either way, this is probably the most important part of your review and without it, your review just won't be as helpful as it could be.

You should specifically speak to your experiences with the player. Questions you should consider in your review include:

How did the music sound?
How easy was setting it up?
Did the software that was included work well, was it easy to install?
Did the connection between the player and the computer work as planned?
Did you run into any problems with the MP3 player or with the included accessories/software?
Did the MP3 player work as it was supposed to? If it didn't, were you able to have it fixed/replaced?

When it comes to the personal experience portion of my reviews, I try to start with opening up the box and following through right up to how it's working for me right now.

There's also a pitfall here, as many reviews tend to have too much experience in them. That is, they focus solely on the experience of the user and skip over the information on the player or they only focus on a bad experience with the product. While this information is important, if it's included in the context of a player's basic features, the review is not as helpful to a consumer. This context of both product details and user experiences gives a holistic view of the MP3 player – from both semi-technical and personal experience standpoints.

Your recommendation
This part of the review combines your description of the features with your experiences with the product and lets you give an overall take on the product. It's a great place to ponder the pluses and minuses of the MP3 player and explains the rating and the recommendation that you provide in addition to your review here on Epinions.

Putting it all together

It's not that hard to write a very helpful MP3 player review, as long as you keep a few things in mind while you are writing your review. Most importantly, think about what you would want to know about this player if you were in the market for a new MP3 player. Once you've got that thought down, just make sure you hit the various features of the MP3 player and what your experiences with the player have been.

If you've got all three put together in your review, you're well on your way to producing a quality MP3 player review here on Epinions.
