It's almost embarrassing to admit that I have used Adameve.com - the Adam & Eve online store - in the recent past. The website - for those of you who have not yet heard about it - is known for its vast selection of sex toys, books, games, CD's, and DVD's. Think of it as a much "classier" version of the back of a Spencer's Gifts store, and about 100 times cleaner than your local adult video store. But nonetheless, it still happens to deal with that one, ever-so-sensitive subject: sex. I'll have you know that I actually bought a gift for a family friend from this website - seriously. We recently attended a Halloween party, which happened to be the host's birthday as well. Considering he is a good bud of mine, and in line with a practical joke of ours, I decided to get him a somewhat inappropriate gift before presenting him with a bottle of champagne. Needless to say, he was absolutely shocked when I handed him "The Cosmo Kama Sutra - 77 mind-blowing sex positions" - a book that I ordered from Adam & Eve. (See? It's not all just raunchy and explicit sex stuff. There's also some literature involved!) In any case, I have to admit that I was very satisfied with Adam & Eve through the entire ordering process. The website is not all trashy, flashy, or inappropriate. There is absolutely no nudity involved, though I did see some pages which showed women's breasts - mainly to display lingerie and costume items. However, there is no flat-out porn or private body part precipitating around random pages. This isn't your traditional "scandalicious" sex toy website. The website is well laid out whether you're just surfing and seeing what catches your interest, or if you want to locate a specific product using the search bar. At the top of the homepage are tabs which lead you to different categories, such as toys, movies, and lingerie. Along the right side are more specifications of the categories listed on the tabs, which makes it easier to find what you need or want more quickly. The homepage also displays top selling items, and it also makes it easy to find clearance items and new arrivals. Basically, the website mimics that of a regular retailer, but with a bit more of a "naughty" attitude to it. Nonetheless, there aren't any inappropriate words used in product descriptions or product names. Instead, everything seems to be "politically correct" for a mature shopper. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to get my friend, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't too creepy or anything of a taboo nature. I decided that perusing the "books and CD's" section under "Sexy Extras" would return the least vile of products. And luckily for me, the book that I ended up purchasing was one of the first hits - right next to "Tickle His Pickle" and "Sex Positions 101". I clicked on the picture of the book, and I was brought to a page with a long (and quite informative) product overview, customer reviews, and shipping information. There was also a list of other products that I may like, which actually related to the product I was looking at - something which many other websites fail miserably at. At $19.95, I found the 77-page book to be somewhat expensive, but considering the uniqueness of the product, I decided it would be worth the money. The expression on my friend's face further justified my splurge. After I added the book to my shopping cart, I went ahead with the secure checkout, where I was informed that standard shipping would cost a steep $8.00 - yikes! (Do note that this rate holds true no matter how many items you are ordering.) I was invited to become a member of the website, but since I do not plan on making another purchase from the website anytime soon, I declined the offer. After that, I typed in all of my billing and shipping information, submitted my order, and then received an e-mail within minutes confirming my purchase. A couple of days later, I went back to the website to track my order, and a few days after that I received the book in a brown, unmarked box with nothing but my address and the store's return address. No store name, no product description - nothing. Talk about discreet! Now, you may be concerned about privacy and safety. Adam & Eve offers a 100% secure payment which is supported by McAfee Secure and VerifyME. Further, the website does not collect data which can identify actual people. When placing your order, you must input your birthday and verify that you are at least 18 years of age. The website does refer parents to software which block sites such as Adam & Eve, which should offer some piece of mind in today's day and age of freedom and vulnerability. In the end, I was impressed with Adam & Eve. While the product I ordered was a bit pricey - as was the shipping - delivery was on-time and I got exactly what I ordered. My American Express card was charged the correct amount, and I did not have to contact the 1-800 number for any reason. The website is not dirty or inappropriate, and it instead does a rather tasteful job of selling sex-oriented products. That being said, it should not be visited by anyone other than a mature adult. Have fun! Adameve.com
